Great series.....just ask SGM Sixta Serious or are you fucking me around? I want to open it now and start watching it if it is good. |
|
I enjoyed it. A lot of folks will say it's not realistic, but I was in Iraq in '03 (NOT with Recon), and I think it's about the most accurate portrayal of the Marine Corps out there.
|
|
I enjoyed the series and the book.
Keep in mind its shot from the perspective of the NCO and below. So the officers and SNCO's are often portrayed as stupid, reckless, ignorant. |

The last couple of episodes helped put everything into perspective. I really liked that. SPOILERS! Especially the bits about why Godfather couldn't just take action against Encino Man and Capt America and why 1st Recon got sent all over the place. The lack of proper support for optics still bugs me, though. |

I liked what a friend of mine who is a former Marine said about Generation Kill, "It's the best film showing a Marine in their natural environment."
|

Loved the series. I rank it right up there with Band of Brothers.

Cpl Ray Pearsons (however you spell it) and Sgt Brad Colbert are my favorite characters. Probably because they are on screen so much. Awesome series.

Don't expect a lot of action or epic battles. The junior Marine is portrayed very well. They bitch and complain constantly (among themselves). Insult each other mercilessly, never know what the fuck is going on, blame everything on their Staff NCO's and Officers, think everyone except the Marines in their squad/fire team are pogues or have it easier/better than they do. They goof on all moto bullshit, and express a fair amount of contempt for the Marine Corps.
They are nothing like the shining, patriotic heroes that GD prefers to portray them as. Not to say that they are not often heroic, but they are often angry discontented young men and reluctant heroes. |

I would think that since war sucks this part in red would be true for most in the service during wartime. My BIL is a B1-B pilot and was also a JTAC. Stand up fella and he felt this way at times. |

Probably my favorite out of the three HBO war series. Inordinately entertaining, extremely quotable and endlessly rewatchable.
"Jesus Christ, Rudy. When are you going to realize that you're fucking gay? You wanna live where you wear Banana Republic and Daisy Duke shorts, now you're going into battle in a chicken suit and J-Lo sunglasses. You dress like a pimp queen." "I don't dress like no goddamn pimp queen...I wear clothes that are body conscious." |
|
I actually have a good friend that was there with 1st Recon Bn, and knew all the fellers in the book. SSgt. C's first-hand experience with the events as depicted are a little different from how Evan Wright portrayed it. He was a Sgt when I met him, so I imagine he was a Lance Criminal or Cpl when he was there.
The only thing in the book (mentioned only briefly) that I agreed with from my own personal experience was that "D" Co. 4th Recon Bn (which I was a part of back in the mid '80s) was a bad joke. The concept of recon units in the reserve component are questionable at best, IMHO. Anyway, I've read the responses from the officers that were there and their side of the story tends to confirm my belief that articles written for Rolling Stone magazine about anything related to the military will lack accuracy and context. Other than that, the book was "entertaining". The series from HBO will naturally be a product of the content of the book. |

He had nothing but good things to say about him. |
