Could be the pump.If it is it may leak a little or not.Are the clothes coming out as dry as they use to?A pump will run you under 40.00 at a supply house. If the transmission is going forget it.Stay away from fridiged aire. Its not if they need to be worked on but when. That being said their older stuff is some of the best in the world.I have a 1933 fridge that has neede exactly one thermostat.

Not only am I DrFrige I double as DrWashingMachine. Three companies owned Frigid-scare. General Motors, WCI and Electrolux (owns them now) If there is a GM insignia (yes just like the cars) it is old and may just need a solenoid coil. If it is made by WCI. Not worth the trouble to repair. Now they are presently made by Electrolux and boy are they making a comeback. Fix it.
Most appliance parts houses have "Repair-Master" do it yourself books for the brand you have.. just ask.
If you opt to change the washer and want to spend money on a GREAT machine. Check out a unit made by "Fisher & Paykel"
They are so quiet and the spin cycle is so fast that your clothes are practically dry. Cuts down the dry time for the dryer as well (energy saver) I have been working o them for over 5 years now and all the problems that we get called on are mostly "customer education" calls.
But if money is an issue, I would go with Kenmore or Whirlpool...same thing.
