And spending some time this winter backpacking around the Lake Jocassee area in the SC Highlands.

Trying to find some decent rentals in the area, but not having much luck. What I'm looking for is a nice cabin that I can rent for a month (reasonably) to use as a base to day hike from. Most of what I see is uber expensive. I've been there before, so I know that it's a big $$ area, but there's got to be something.

If you live in that area, I'd be interested in any info you have.

In case you're wondering, we're in our 50's. I've been retired a few years, wife can retire, but hasn't and since I'm a backpacker, I get the cabin fever in the winter.

Ok, got you now. I was looking too far northeast. I have never explored that SC part (Sumter National Forest?) Further southwest runs off my topo map. Looks interesting.

In that area if there are even any deals to be had you're going to have to spend some time with boots on the ground looking. You're going to have to get away from the lake as well. You could maybe find a deal in Rosman or on Hwy. 11 east and west of the lake. Other than that you're talking vacation rentals, I don't think you'll find what you consider a deal on a vacation rental. Good luck with your search.

Check the local craigslist there for deal on camper.

Buy camper upon arrival and park in wilderness area.

List camper as free with directions to it when leaving and keep propane tank.

Drive home.

Probably much cheaper than renting a cabin for a month
