You can always throw good glass on another gun. Would you say the same about the cheaper glass?

Sure, it's your money and it's not stupid to do.
To exaggerate your question is my example. A $200 Ruger 10/22 rifle with over $4,000 of night vision stuff with silencer. Is my example over kill, sure but it's a hoot to shoot at night! 
The night vision is swapped back and forth from my AR15....

You are a guy and these are your toys. It doesn't have to be logical.
Any kids going without supper or without shoes? Then put whatever optic you want on there. Something else to consider with optics with regards to rimfire guns––-Many optics primarily designed for centerfire rifles do not focus at shorter distances. If you slip one of these scopes on a rimfire and want to hit a squirrel in the eye or a soda can at 75yards you might be in trouble. Just check the focus range of any scope before mounting on a rim fire gun |

While I don't own any night vision like above, I have mounted an ACOG TA-11D on a 10/22 just for shits and giggles. Thought the guy next to me at the range was going to have an aneurysm

Yep, depends on what you are doing with the rifle, but I wouldn't hesitate to put really good glass on a inexpensive varmit rifle.

I have never regretted putting too much scope on a cheaper gun. I have regretted not putting enough scope on a more expensive gun though, more than once.

I have a mini aimpoint on a 10/22 and an ACOG on a spikes .22 upper. So I'll say yes go with good glass even though it's "only" a .22

Yes. I have a old Leupold M8 12X fixed power with target turrets. The scope used was as as much as the rifle new...
The rifle is a pre AccuTrigger Mark II BV |

on a 22... no
typical 22 distances are inside 100yrds. you can get VERY capable glass for that MUCH cheaper. |

If we are adding suggestions then I will throw out the Mueller APV as well. It is a popular optic over on rimfire central. I have one on a CZ 452 and it works very well on a rimfire. The crosshairs are slightly thick for my taste, but the 14x really makes up for it.

Nikon Prostaff. I had to send a leupold back twice (something with the O ring in the power adjustment). Threw a pro staff on the rifle i had from a sale and its been there for years trouble free. Cheap, clear and reliable.

Absolutely. You will enjoy the rifle much more, and in turn really use it. I have an $800 Zeiss on my 10-22 and it always goes to the range, it never stays home. As you get older you will appreciate better optics more & more.

I use simmons 3-9X40's on all my rimfires, but there's nothing wrong with using a Leupold. I use them on my larger caliber guns and they're great scopes.
Jus because it's a rimfire dosen't mean it can't be a serious hunting or training gun. |

I think general rule of thumb is... you should put twice the value of the rifle into your optics.
I'm a huge fan of Leupold stuff... and wouldn't think twice about putting a $400 scope on a $200 gun. I recently hung a Mark4 on my Rem 700. The scope retails for over $1200. The gun sells for $600. That said, I can't justify spending $1600+ on a Nightforce or better scope. For me, there needs to be a compromise of some sort... and a decent Leupold always fills that need. |

Whatever scope you decide to get, make sure it has an adjustable objective down to 25 yards, or so. Parallax can hurt groups if not correctable down to the ranges you will shoot. If the Leupold you mention in the OP is this one, it focuses down to 30 meters and has the fine duplex reticle:
VX-II 3-9x33mm Rimfire EFR RiflescopeIt just depends on how precise you want to be in shooting this 22lr. If you're looking to plink away a fixed Weaver 6X would be a good choice, and pretty cheap, if you aren't looking to shoot bugholes as a main goal. |

I would if I had the extra cash. I just picked up the FVSR (threaded barrel Savage). I need a scope for it and was just thinking a 60 Simmons would be OK for it. If I can I'll try and get a 150 dollar nikon for it but I don't think there will be much of a difference.

I cringe every time I see the opposite happen. I've seen more good rifles with shitty glass than I can count. |

If it was a spare scope I already had then using it instead of buying a new scope is fine. But if you are going to buy one think carefully. What would a scope at two -three times the price provide in advantage over a lesser priced but good quality scope add to the game for a .22 cal. rifle. If all you want is to brag about is that you have a Luppy go ahead but most experienced shooters at the range won't be that impressed nor will your marksmanship be any more improved. I have a Luppy, Bushy and Millett scopes. They cover a wide range in price but each is perfect for what each is used for.

In my experience, that Savage Mark II 22LR rifle is an amazingly accurate rifle, and why can't you put the Leupold on it? If you want to put some cheaper glass on it, put a Redfeild 3-9x40mm scope on it, US Made and outstanding glass for the money, $160.

I put a 3X5X10X50 on my Savage 308 tactical years ago i think the rifle was about 200 and the leupold was around 400 made a hell of a rifle

Scope Dam thing is almost as long as the barrel but dammed if I can't hit them little bastards in the eye at 150 yds with it . Plus the side focus is nice.
