If you had a grand and had to buy an out-of -box tac driver, what caliber and manufacturer? (looking for a piece I can put a scope on and get decent accuracy @ 1000yrds.)(In the black @ 1000yrds!)

Seems to me 1000 yards demands .50 BMG. After that, how big is the black?

Go to www.biggerhammer.net and check out the Barrett (.50 cal board).

A 1000 yd accurate rifle is generally expensive.  You also need a fast round (or VLD round) to make sure it is still supersonic at that speed--when it drops below the speed of sound it looses stability.

The cheapest .50 you can get (and it is definitely capable of sub 10" groups at 1000yds under good conditions and with a good shooter behind it) is the State Arms guns.  I bought their KC 2000 (haven't had a chance to shoot it yet), and he just brought out an $1800 aluminum stocked special again ($2200 with the laminated stock).

Other than a .50, you may want to look at the .338 Lapua guns--they can do 1000yds pretty easily.

Unfortunately, you are unlikely to get a gun for under $1000.  And it would probably take another $700+ to get a good scope for it (Leupold or better).

Nah, it doesn't hit that hard.  I don't even have a brake on mine and it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

I'm no Camp Perry expert but I'd also stay away from the .308 for 1000 competition.  yayayaya, I know you shoot a fly off the target experts will say .308 is great for 1k yards but for your average joe it's not.  I'm with most of these guys,  for a non-professional shooter, a 50 bmg is the easiest way to 1k for the average shooter.  Oh and a range finder unless you're shooting at a marked range.  You'll need it.

I'd get a sendero in 300 ultra or 7 Rem mag or 7 STW, a leupold 4.5x14 Tactical and a range finder.  You'll be over 1K dollars but not much.

Good luck.

1000 yards. hats far. But I would think that accuracy at that range is more then a grand. The Marine sniper rifle Remington 40x in 300 Win mag. I think it is around 1600. Plus scope.I would like to get that in 308 Win. I never shot over 200 yards. I live in a very congested part of the world.
