Cayuga County (between Rochester and Syracuse) has been having a problem with drug dealers stealing anhydrous ammonia, a fertilizer, to make meth

"They're tired of chasing down these guys, tackling them, grilling them, banging cars with them. And - after 18 months, more than 200 thefts and more than two dozen arrests - it's not getting any better. So the guns in Wheeler's truck are for the turkeys when they're in season, and the woodchucks when they're in the way. But they're also there just in case.

''It might not be the right thing to do. The sheriff tells you it's not the right thing to do,'' Wheeler said, ''but I'm willing to grab one of these guys and take care of things.''

More than 30 runners - nearly all of them from that small region in northern Pennsylvania - have been arrested in southern Cayuga County since May 2001.

Lot's of places now require ID and track all purchases of the chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine.

So the cookers have resorted to stealing the chemicals.

It's a big business. in the southwestern states you have entire counties that are nothing but dirt, meth labs, & manure.

Isn't anhydrous ammonia a bomb making component? e.g., OK city, WTC I

Anhydrous Ammonia is a liquid under pressure, gas when released. Propane is another good example of this state. The thieves will fill it into the propane bottles like the ones you use for your gas grill and use it in the process of cooking meth.

The problem is nation wide, as we have many similar incidents here in north Texas. Many times in thier portable labs they will just find a remote bridge to work under and leave the lab and run off with the product. Leaves a very expensive, hazzardous mess for someone to clean up. fullclip

Nope-wrong kind of fertizilizer. A common fertilizer mixed with a certain liquid can be used for an explosive.
