I certainly don't want to push the limits, but my understanding of the etymology of the word 308 mentions, and that of the extremely offensive word that he makes a not so subtle reference to are unrelated.
Again, don't want to risk membership, but in many ways, the origin of the word "gyp" is far more racially offensive. Again, I would never use, or even mention, this word, but in an academic discussion of language such as this.
The man's name was Howard, beekeeper. If my source (web reference to the New York Post), is accurate, then the NAACP responded to the incident:
"NAACP Board Chairman Julian Bond opined that the precipitous acceptance of Howard's resignation was ''niggardly'' on [DC Mayor] Williams' part."
