Gun enthusiasts are rallying opposition to a string of new federal proposals that could close off hundreds of thousands of acres in the open West to target shooting.

The proposals from the Bureau of Land Management potentially would outlaw target shooting in swaths of public land in Arizona and Colorado as part of a broader conservation planning effort.

Here in Oregon, I don't think anyone would change their target shooting behavior no matter what BLM did.

They'd have to cite a hell of a lot of people to put a stop to it.

You're damn right. there's so much land and tree coverage, it'd be absurd to regulate it anyway

I wonder why this only applies to AZ & CO?

BLM has land in nearly every state, and definitely in all the western states.

Anyone else find that odd?

Well, I'm sure they will try to do the same thing in CA damnit.
BLM is the only place I shoot.

Here in CA, BLM banned CA listed AWs on some land, not others. When Bush came in, he made them stop that, and AWs became legal on all BLM land (assuming it was a legal registered AW). I've been expecting that to change since 2008.

The Democrats like fucking with the western states. Clinton did it big time, and the Sage Brush Rebellion was an earlier response to the big government imposition on the west.

No shit....

I have my own range that I PAID for. I got tired of kissing folks ass to be able to shoot much less deal with the two-toothers at a public range that could be closed on a whim by the authorities.

I think folks around the country are going to start finding out nothing is free or if it is it won't come without restrictions. You can fight it and good luck to you but sooner or later you are going to have to pay to play.

"I can't see a shooter bringing in a washing machine or a computer or bags of trash just to use as a target," Roberts said. Besides, he said, there are existing laws that could be enforced to prevent more garbage in the monument.

Really? He needs to come shooting with me. Many of our worst enemies are shooters. I just came back today from a site that had a TV & a burned out couch. We need to face the facts as they are and not how we want them to be.

Yep, it happens all the time and is a legitimate problem.  However, it is no worse of a problem than other recreation types like ORV.

I suspect that if they started civil asset forfeiture of firearms and vehicles people would stop shooting on BLM land pretty quick.  I should quit giving these people ideas.

As far as citing a lot of people, it would be considered revenue generation and prove the need for more officers and a bigger budget for helicopters, satellites, and who knows what else.

I know you're from Texas, but I'm not sure you have a firm grasp on exactly how remote and/or densely forested parts of Oregon are, or what kind of people typically shoot there.

I suspect that enforcement would change dramatically after the second BLM employee vanished from the face of the earth.
