The thing about the Japanese soldier/sailor was okay.....we were at war with the Japanese at the time!

The one from The Jungle Book was fine too. You have to make several assumptions first before that one looks bad.

I'm not sure, but it definitely changed over the years.

I've got a reprint of the original, as well as one from the late 60, and one from the 90s. There have been additional revisions and changes to it to make it more politically correct.

In the original (and in the 60s), in addition to the racism, Tintin also "hunts" a rhinoceros by sneaking into a tree above it, drilling a hole in its armored back, putting in a stick of dynamite, and then blowing it into little pieces.

He also kills about 20 elephants.

I have some old Charlie Chan movies on DVD, including one with Stepin Fetchit. It's interesting to see what was funny/reasonable at one point.

My only problem was that other than a few obvious models most guns were black upper case Ls.

I remember seeing long ago a <Warner Bros??> cartoon where the main characters are hunting pigmies & at one point bait their trap with watermelon.

Thought for sure Coal Black & De Sebbin Dwarfs would've been on the vid.

The only one I found to be over the top was the Bugs Bunny with Yosemite Sam.

But what the fuck? If people are offended by those then I guess I should start crying and whining about every Elmer Fudd Cartoon I've ever seen.

King Louie never struck me as racist at all.

The bugs bunny one is kinda eh as well.

The fat broad from Tom & Jerry is based on any number of real people.

When I was a little kid, my mom hired a cleaning lady that was a dead ringer for that cartoon.

It's a non-derogatory stereotype that exists in real life.

The thing that gets me is that, in most of the films where people complain of racist portrayals, the minority is either the winner or the best behaved of all the characters.

Who consistently won every cat and mouse game with Sylvester? Speedy. Or slowpoke.

In "Blazing Saddles" the only white that wasn't an idiot, buffoon, or evil was The Kid - and he was a washed up alcoholic.

In "16 Candles", Long Duk Dong was preyed upon by white women, patronized by his guest family, and generally abused while all around spoiled white kids are destroying a house. And in the end he basically says "Fuck you - I'm tired" and walks away.

Only in America can people get pissed off when the hero of the story is a member of their culture, simply because he was PORTRAYED as a member of their culture.

The Bugs Bunny bit had me laughing, not the content, I just think Bugs is hilarious.

I remember reading something a long time ago, Cartoon Network had stopped airing the Speedy Gonzales cartoons in the states because it was deemed offensive to hispanics, but they still aired it on Cartoon Network Latin America because it was one of the most popular cartoons.

Really? The Betty Boop one was pretty bad: blackface, big lips, loud and inconsiderate in the theater, and fucking WATERMELON.

The rest were less than sensitive but the Betty Boop one was intentionally racist.

You know, I remember seeing many of those as a kid. Watching The Jungle Book, for example, I never had a single brain cell dedicated to figuring out what the color of the voice actor who did the voices for the characters were. There was never a single second in my childhood when King Louie's voice made an impact on how I saw or interacted with somebody else. Neither did Speedy Gonzales, Bugs Bunny, Screwy Squirrel, Tom and Jerry...hell, not even this Droopy cartoon.

I didn't figure out any of this stuff was supposed to make me a racist until I was an adult...and by then there were so many things that were supposed to have made me a racist (being white, being middle class, being from the south, being male, etc) the cartoons probably didn't have a prayer of making any real impact.

I've never watched it on purpose. I was just making a blanket statement. I hate reality TV and shows like AIdol.
