Denmark has followed Hungary's lead in
imposing taxes of certain types of magical foods that make people
fat:

The new tax, designed by Denmark’s outgoing government in an
effort to limit the population’s intake of fatty foods, will add 16
kroner ($2.87, or 2.15 euros) per kilo (2.2 pounds) of saturated
fats in a product.

For example, according to the AFP, the tax will increase the
cost of 250 grams of butter by 2.20 kroner, to more than 18
kroner....

The new tax will be levied on all products including saturated
fats –– from butter and milk to pizzas, oils, meats and pre-cooked
foods –– in a costing system that Denmark’s Confederation of
Industries (DI) says is a bureaucratic nightmare for producers and
outlets.

The real sad thing is that there is zero, zero, none, no evidence that a diet high in fat, or high in saturated fat will make you gain weight, or destroy your heart.  In fact, most credible evidence points towards a lower body fat % and better cholesterol numbers in people with diets high in animal fats.

Exactly. It's all about the Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio. If you're getting enough 3 you're GTG.

Were it the way the Danish government supposes, I'd be a motherfucking HUGE lardass with high cholesterol. I'm neither overweight, nor at risk of a heart attack (judging by my last lipid panel, where everything is within the normal range - if you're into that sort of thing).

In fact most of my calories come from saturated fat. By their reckoning, I should be huge. I rarely work out either, which probably confounds them even more.

I just find it interesting that working out or not- a diet somewhat high in fat, and little to no processed foods (IIRC from other posts of yours) still results in a healthy weight and body composition.

Further evidence that eating fat doesn't make you fat.

Can't. I've never read one. I just use regular cookbooks, or I'll catch something on Food Network that looks good. Other times, I might run across a recipe that I can easily modify, without screwing it up.

If I eat a processed food, it's a bite or two just to remember what it tasted like. I eat a lot of veggies too, but if you sit down and calculate the caloric content of everything I ate in a day (I should note that I don't bother doing this, other than to satisfy an occasional curiosity), most of my calories come from saturated fat, as a percentage of the total.

So not only do I not work out regularly, but I eat an assload of fat, and don't bother counting calories or weighing/measuring portions. I just eat when I'm hungry, and stop when I'm not.

I really want the Danes to explain why I'm not a lard ass.

Yep. 60% to 70% of my calories come from fat, mostly saturated animal fat, and while I do strength training I do no cardio, and I'm losing fat steadily.

You're right - a capitalist market economy with a positive trade balance, 4% unemployment, less regulatory burden on new business and lower corporate taxes than the U.S. - is definitely a socialist hellhole on the way to communism.

The NEW government, which IS left of center, is potentially going to be a problem.  The outgoing - other than occasional idiotic stuff like this tax - was pretty good.

I did FitDay for a while, then my own spreadsheets when that turned out to be faster (cut and paste), then finally went to subnet's style of eating when I want and not keeping track. I'm glad I did all of the recordkeeping, though, because I have a much better sense of what's in food.

Now I'm thinking I'd better delete all those records of my criminally high intake of saturated fat before they come after me for a retroactive tax for all the heart attacks I caused.

I kept careful track of everything for a week, back in February, just to satisfy a curiosity. It was interesting, because I found that I automatically eat a lot more when I'm pretty active, and eat very little when I'm laying around the house all day. It's completely subconscious.

This is kind of why I make this face ––> when people insist on working out to loose weight. I won't deny that it works, but it...makes me fucking hungry when I do it. And you know what I do when I'm hungry? I eat. If I don't, I find that I'm pretty miserable and generally cranky. Hunger does that.

I kind of wonder if it's because fat people are supposed to be punished for their gluttonous sins, or some damn thing. Ever read advice on weight loss? It's always filled with adjectives like hard, pain, sacrifice, effort, work, and so forth. I always kind of read it like "You need to PAY for your sins, fatty!".

It's either that, or I'm just thinking too damn much.
