My sister in Laws son is trying to become a Marine. According to her, the Marines have offered him a $20,000 signing bonus.
I haven't believed a thing the kid has said since he was 5 years old. Any Recruiters out there? |
When I was trying to join, the recruiter told me that the Marines dont typically do sign on bonuses.
But Im not in the know nor am I a recruiter. |
The army offered me 2k to sign a 8 year contract with a communications mos lol

The traditional answer to the question "What can the Marine Corps do for me?" is "Not a fucking thing. What can you do for us?" I'd think he'd have to be bringing a lot to the table to get an enlistment bonus like that. |
Bonuses are down across the board. Retention is high right now. Smells fishy.
there was a 20k re enlist bonus for Navy USMC a few months back, but not for new enlistments.
still not enough money ............................ Go army !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not buying that one, unless they are misunderstood and they are giving 20k for college or something like that. When I was joining the recuiters laughed at sign on bonus idea. They said, "You either want to be a Marine or you dont", I did, I joined and that was that.

Quoted: Quoted: Not buying it. some of the re enlistment bonuses were very very high, 40+ Not anymore since everyone's downsizing. Had a buddy that got 40K a few months ago though..... So I don't know. He was in Afghanistan when he re-upped though. |

I got 5K to enlist for 4 years as 11B in 1982. I got $2,500.00 upon completion of MOS school. That was a good bonus in 1989. |
I was offered 32k in '07 by the Army for infantry. Got disqualified for a hearing loss and couldn't get a waiver. I just wanted to serve my country, I would still join today if they asked me.

Quoted: re upping is your multiplier x base pay x years reenlisting normally. So, probably was making pretty decent money (E4-E5) and re-upped for 4 years with a decent multiplier (1.5-2).Quoted: Quoted: Not buying it. some of the re enlistment bonuses were very very high, 40+ Not anymore since everyone's downsizing. Is that for reserve? I know if a Reserve unit is low on numbers(often times before a deployment) they will give out 20k bonuses..I am USMCR and ALOT of guys I know got 20k bonuses just for being your average run of the mill 0311......Gotta take off a bit for taxes too...Then sometimes they pay it at different times..Like a few thousand after SOI, then the rest at the end of your contract...etc. Thats the only enlistment bonus I know.....Normally that's done before a unit mobilizes too, if they are short on numbers....No Marine Reserve units will be deploying to combat zones for now either...So Im not sure.

I haven't believed a thing the kid has said since he was 5 years old. Any Recruiters out there? When my brother enlisted a couple years ago, I'm nearly positive he said that the Marines do not give signing bonuses. Nowadays, definitely not. edit: Quoted: When I was joining the recuiters laughed at sign on bonus idea. They said, "You either want to be a Marine or you dont" This is almost verbatim what they told him, and he told me when I asked him about this topic. |
I was speaking to a recruiter just last week and he told me the 03 field is actually closed to potential new recruits, that's how well The Corps is doing with recruiting/retention.
I smell BS, unless the kid has some crazy skill or something unanticipated. |
Either he's lying, or the recruiter lied to him. I've heard some pretty outlandish shit from recruiters, so it's hard to tell on this one.
20k is bullshit! It took me a fucking year to get the chowhall to serve me a whole chicken!
There was a $100K reenlistment bonus (5-year) for Navy Nuc-ETs.
This kid barely made it through high school. He can't walk and chew gum and gets a head ache trying to read a comic book. The only job he ever had was Mc Donalds and he sucked at that. I can't believe that any branch of the military would take him much less give him real money.

RE-enlistment, yeah, but not for first joining. 5K is pretty common for first joining, but even that's getting rarer. |
I thought I read somewhere that the Marines always make mission in regard to recruiting/retention.
It is after Oct 1st so bonuses might have become available.
For the army when I signed on August 30th the only bonuses that were available were 1000 for infantry 4 year contract, and 8000 for a eod 6 year contract. The marine recruiter told my friend that the marine corps isn't offering bonuses because they are overmanned as it is. shit in the recruiting world changes on a daily basis though |
When I was in, I remember a bunch of Marines got signing bonuses for enlisting in a communications field. But the enlistment had to be for 5 years. I don't remember how much it was. This was between 1999 and 2003.
He is bullshitting OP.
In 2003 I got three grand for two years Active duty Army. In 2008 I got 20,000 for six years. My brother got 60,000 in 2006 for four years(Army). Look, why the fuck would any services offer those kinds of bonuses in this kind of economy? Easy, they don't. (unless of course you might me able to operate a nuclear power station on a submarine or something) |

I've been talking to the Army and right now the bonuses for 11x are only like $1000 for 4 years. If that's what the Marines are offering though I may have someone else to talk to coming up, a good ASVAB score must be worth something

in 05 my enlistment bonus was a Tshirt.... But I think they gave everyone one of those.
I had a buddy who re-enlisted in 2008 as a motor-T mechanic and got 36k

He's full of crap.
And if he's not, I'm gonna be really pissed 'cause I just signed last week |

Unless me has gone to MEPS an actually had a contract put together, he hasn't been offered shit.
The recruiter probably just said he could get a bonus up to $20k, which is the maximum. Now what he actually gets... likely won't even be close to that. |
