Arfians;

Was just watching the History Channel series "Tales of the Gun", when they were talking about Clyde Barrow and the guns he cut down for robbing banks & suchlike. This is what his "Whippet" shotgun looked like:

Which comes back to an issue I have been having. My heavy HD piece is a Mossy 500 with a pistol grip, which is fine as far as it goes, but hitting anything much beyond 10 yards would be challenging w/o a buttstock of some kind. Now, I can't cut the barrel off that short unless I give my Uncle Sammy $200 for a SBR, but I'm intrigued by that sawn-off buttstock (yes, I know I have to keep it +26" overall

).

Hence my question: has anyone ever tried this? How is it, shooting a gun with something like a 10" length of pull? Or can anyone recommend a good folding stock? The last one I tried, the wire stock, seriously sucked ass.

Strangely enough I have been pondering doing this but not to sir length. From what I have read from people that have them they are quite the bruiser.

Ya, I would have expected that (smaller buttstock surface area & all that, less weight, etc). But, just like a light .458 magnum, it is meant to be carried much & shot little. I would likely fit it with a Pachmeyer Decelerator pad, tho I would have cut it almost down to nothing to fit the sawn off stock.

Ive got a few kimel kampers. No problem to shoot it chicken wing, but anything else is tiring. They have 7lop.

Just Googled "kimel kampers". Interdasting. About what I'm talking about, except in a repeater.

So, any inflamation on good folding stocks for a pumper?

9/10 people that complain about recoil on a A5/ Rem-11 probably shot a gun that had an improperly configured recoil system or it was missing pieces.

Have you looked at a youth size, or entry size stocks?
They have about a 13" length of pull.
My 870 slug gun wears a Speedfeed IV-s. I had a III on it, but it was too long for me.

It didn't bother me with slugs, but after putting a field bbl on it, with a turkey choke, I fired one shot, called it a day and ordered a cheek pad.

The top side of the stock is a little narrow compared to others.

You got to give Clyde credit, he wore nice clothes, had the best, fastest car for the time, 75 HP 1933 Ford V-8, , lot's of Colt .45's, and several BAR's, including some that were cut down, but––––––––he had a short, ugly, girlfriend, but 4 out 5 ain't bad

I regularly shoot pumps with a 12" LOP, and have an 11-48 (A5 action) with the same. They're easier to shoot them than "standard" stocks at 14-15" LOP, and doesn't start to get weird until go shorter than 11" or so.

The "Whippet" guns had an LOP nearer 10", IIRC. Edit: Depending on gauge. Bonnie preferred 20G, and Clyde preferred 16G, both of which would have been shorter. The gun in the OP is a 12G, with a LOP right around 12-13".

This. Shooting a12G A5/M11 or clone feels almost exactly like shooting a 7.62 AK.

It ain't a A5 but it is close.

18.3 in. barrel and full 14 in. LOP

Same 18.3 in. barrel with 2 in. cut off stock so it is still "all day" shootable.
I don't want to cut it any shorter because I am already bumping my nose when shooting it and if I go any shorter I am going to bloody my nose.

There are not too many 100 to 400 dollar BARs and copies (more like $4000+) available like with the A5/model 11s.

those cut down Mdl 11 are great littl shotguns, I had one under the seat of 3 of my PU's until an aquaintance made me an offer I couldnt refuse for it.
they do kick pretty hard but point of aim was always spot on and for a 70 yr old weapon, never a failure..

They are recoil operated, they will work right off the bench after being chopped, shortening them actually seems to make them run even better. With gas guns you have to make sure you still have enough barrel length to have good back pressure or open up the ports to make them run, with recoil guns you have actually make the action even faster (less weight to get moving and stop with the reciprocating barrel) and when it comes to things that run using springs and friction, speed is your friend.

While a chopped down shotgun looks sexy, I've always prefered a full stocked one, faster follow up shots and the abillty to deliver a proper buttstroke is more important to me.

The stock on the A5/M11 wasn't cut like that because they wanted some stock left, they did it because there is a spring in the stock and you can't cut it any shorter.

I would do it, but first, I would make sure i have the original barrel and stock removed and kept, then do the chopping on a replacement barrel and stock (preferabbly new manufacture); I would not feel happy mangling up a Colt M1918 BAR.

My 870 SBS (14" barrel) has a Hogue stock on it that has a ~11" LOP.
Its very short.

But then you don't generally rob banks and or have to shoot from a 1933 Ford V8 either.....
