You have to leave enough room for the pullout.
One thing I like about flying is that the rules are simple and immutable.  Energy management, AoA, lift, thrust, drag, etc.  It doesn't matter who you are, you can't negotiate or bluff your way out of it, when you simultaneously run out of airspeed, altitude and ideas..  
Hope he didn't leave any young kids behind.

Every single time too. Almost having enough room just doesn't cut it.
