Hey guys, I just brought my first baby home from the hospital and he has trouble falling asleep some nights. Running water really seems to help. Running a tap all night would kill us when it came time to pay up. We are running some sounds on the computer and he likes them. I cant find a site that I can loop the sound or download a sound into windows media player and play it on repeat.

Surely someone has done this before!

Go to wal mart and buy a white noise machine.  They can be had for less than $20.

there are all kinds of music/sounds gadgets that attach to baby cribs. Just check out the baby section at the local chinese retailer. (Walmart)

Get two water pitchers, one full of water. Pour the full one into the empty one, repeat, all night..... sleep is highly over rated.

We got a cheap CD player for both of my kids.  My daughter listened to Enya all night and son listened to Nora Jones.  Guess they found it soothing.  They both gave it up by about 4 or 5 y/o.

It's just white noise, very typical for babies. Most daycares have them.

This is what a good father would do

We just used fan noise, but not a ceiling fan so we could point it away from them.

ETA:  congrats by the way!

Don't do anything.  No extra sounds, nothing.  The kid will go to sleep.

If anything you want to mix in louder sounds like the TV, doorbell, etc so they will sleep through that.

Don't placate them, it will come back to bite you.

I can still remember how good it felt the first full night sleep after we brought our first home. It only took 3 months.

Wow - I guess I shouldn't complain.

Our 2 week old goes to sleep at 11pm, and then sleeps till ~3:30am.  My wife feeds her, and then the baby wakes up around 7:30.

Box fan pointed at the wall.

ETA:  Wait til the four month wakeful/teething time.  That's where we are right now.  Plus she has an ear infection.  Yeehaw!

I put a wind up clock near my daughter's bed when she was a baby. Helped her to sleep.

One night I accidentally set the alarm. am and baby was not amused.

Matbe that's why she doesn't like loud noises now.

Oscillating fan makes nice white noise, moves air, and drowns out the little noises that wake me up.

Let me just say Drill Sgt, it is time to grow a little back bone.  Let the kid cry.  Check if they are wet, or hungry.  Then put them down.

Try breastfeeding...

Seriously - toss that kid to your lady's boob and let mother nature work it's magic....meaning, the dad sleeps!

The famous 5 S's work wonders:

Swaddling
Shushing
Side Positioning
Swinging
Sucking

ETA: My 7 week year old son is swaddled on his side right now after sucking down 4 ounces of powdered mojo.  His mom is crashed out right now, but she'll be up in an hour or two ... when he wakes up.

Newborns are on a 3 - 4 hour rotation, on average.  Extremes on either end of course.  Get used to the chaos my man....life will NEVER be the same for you.

Congrats too!

I made a 70 minute loop of rain and wave noises and burned it to a CD....it was basically white noise with a little "texture"

Played it every night on CD player until the CD player died.

We got a noisemaker from Brookstone when the 2nd kid came along:

(but I still think my CD sounded better)

Another vote for a fan.  The humming sound it a great noise to sleep to and it drowns out doors being shut, silverware being dropped on the floor, dogs barking, etc.

Just direct it away from the child.

Good luck-

I have a 2 week old currently and this is the approach I use!  Works great!

The doc told us today that we should start getting the baby used to taking a bottle though, I had to give her the stink eye for interfering with my plan of maximum sleep.

download a screensaver, their free almost anywhere.

I have one that the veiw is of the outside of a tent with crackeling fire, during a thunderstorm(or adjustable flow).

but the sounds seems to come from inside the tent as the rain hits.

Bet that would do it.

Take him for regular walks or for a drive every night just before sleep time. Twenty or thirty minutes, you will quickly grow to enjoy it, If he wakes in the middle of the night and won't go back to sleep... yep take a quik walk. Both of mine loved this and the baby as well as myself slept very soundly after.

i managed to get by sleeping through the whole thing and putting it off on the wife. ymmv.  however, i do know if you start doing special stuff to get the kid to sleep you will be doing it for years. for god's sake don't let the kid in your bed or you won't ever get it out.

You laugh.

My neighbor's trailer trash granddaughter told me once, straight-faced, that she had her new infant, just back from the hospital from the premie ward, on rice cereal and benadryl to keep him asleep.

This is a kid who was almost 2 months premature because mom wanted to chain-smoke and drink a ton of Coors Light during pregnany.

CD of rain and thunder storms did wonders in the OiRogers household during the period of "No Sleep for ANYONE"...   As an added benefit, the mini-Oi sleeps lie a corpse during thunder storms now.
Also... Check out the Playskool rain-forest music box... Has a rain setting (and music, and bird noises and motion and lights as well...) It was also a well invested bit of cash.

1. Put baby in crib
2. Close door
3. Allow baby to cry until asleep
4. Repeat the next night until crying stops

Most bathrooms have this thing called a "closet."  People usually store stacks of bath towels, washclothes, and hand towels in them.  Almost like a small, padded room.  These "closets" also have doors, on hinges that allow them to be closed.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Jungle noises are great..

Just make sure you do not get one with the Tarzan yell in the middle of it or you will not get any sleep yourself.

Every time you hear it you will wake up instantly looking to see what direction the elephants are coming from.

Haha those are awesome!

OP you can use endlessyoutube to replay a youtube video forever.

Example:  http://endlessvideo.com/watch?v=AYw7eJYadco

You might try it with a white noise vid or something.  A free alternative to buying a noise machine like others suggest.
