Many years ago during a Fat Tuesday celebration in Seattle I walked into a bar that apparently I wasn't supposed to be in and ordered a beer. As I was sipping my beer thinking "This looks like someplace I shouldn't be", two big black dudes walked up and said "You going to drink that beer and leave, right?". I get the treatment from my wife's family too. They're from Nicaragua. All eight of her aunts married white guys. All eight white guys grew up in LA but don't speak Spanish, so the aunts all squawk away in Spanish knowing their husbands don't know what they're saying. Along comes me, a blond haired, blue eyed Irish kid from Boston who never lived in a Spanish neighborhood or had to speak it on a daily basis. But I took 6 years of Spanish through Jr. High/High school, so while I make no claim to speak the language fluently, am pretty good at understanding much of what's being said. First family cookout I attended I sat there quietly as the Nicaraguensas squawked away while the husbands drank their beer and talked about baseball.
One of the husbands looks at me and says, "get used to it, they know we don't speak Spanish". I made the mistake of saying, "Oh yeah? Your wife says you're fat", then worked my way around the room pointing at each husband "and you're lazy, and you need to last longer than 2 minutes in bed, and you have an ugly scar on your ass, and you need to get your teeth fixed......" Eight pissed off Spanish women beat the shit out of me, leaving me black and blue for ratting them out and I couldn't stop laughing the whole time. Now they call me "little Mexican" and "pulga" (flea) and like to pick on me for my "white bread world of hard shell tacos". Racists.....being called Mexican in a Nicaraguan household in LA is almost as bad as being called a natural-born citizen.

Not getting chopsticks is not discrimination. It's a reason to leave a shitty tip. Not being allowed into the restaurant is discrimination or using the back door to get in is discrimination... Walking to the restroom and seeing two signs with one reading "whitey banging my daughter" is discrimination... Dude, look at the close up pic of your g/f and the dog.... closely.... and you're worried about f-ing chopsticks? |
