Enough of BofA.

Any ideas on what banks are not in bed with the goverment or didn't recieve any bailout cash?

What banks would you never do business with?

Thank you in advance!!

My small local bank has an awesome rating on bankrate.  Gets my money. I  Keep a checking account at large bank too just in case.  USAA gets my business for everything else.

This... find a good one with at least a few locations and that is a member of the CUSC Shared Branch network.

A credit union, or if you're eligible, USAA.  USAA will let you take a picture of a check for deposit and credit it on the spot, so you don't have to worry about having a "branch" close by.

I have Chase but have considered PNC.  Chase has been ok, been with them for 13 years or so, no real reason to switchh other than wanting something new.

Lots of good info in this thread.

Credit Union!!! Make sure that it is not a small CU, you should know what I am talking about. Navy Fed CU is the largest in the USA but you need to of served in order to be a member. USAA is an ok choice for banking, thier rates suck.

Local credit union.  Mine provides free checking (with direct deposit), free debit cart, decent savings rates (considering the current interest rates), multiple branches and ATM's, free notary service, overdraft protection, a 9% visa, a coin counting machine in every branch for 2% of the amount, only charge me $.65 for using another banks ATM, etc.............

We use a local credit union and are very happy.

They have enough branches around where I live, and they have a killer deal - 4% interest on my checking account - up to $25,000.  That's insane... but they pay it, so I take it.

Any other bank that you move to will be bought out by B of A within a year or two.

Resistance is futile.  You will be assimilated.

First National of Nebraska.  It is one of the 50 largest banks in the county and has subsidiary banks in several states and an online bank called FNBO Direct.  It made it through the 2008 financial panic without a significant problem because the owners are not retards and hold the financial stability of their institution paramount.  They never got greedy in the mortgage game.

First National of Nebraska has a subsidiary in Illinois called Castle Bank

You and I are the only ones.

I don't know their bailout/government status though so if I were the OP I'd go with a credit union, but I am not worried about bailout/government status.

UMB is rock solid on the balance sheet.  No Tarp money. Hone mortgage default rate is about the same as it was pre 2008 because they don't make bad loans.

I like Wells Fargo, I have never had a problem with them for general banking or my mortgage.
I also really like their online banking and bill pay system.
However when or if I ever decide to leave them I'll be going to a credit union.

I hear ya. You could use USAA as your primary and use a local mom & pop branch for check cashing/ depositing/ transferring etc.  Just an idea.

You say that in every thread about banks.

In the grand scheme of nationally-distributed banks, they are better than most.

We've had very good success with both Chase (student loan payment, bill pay, daily card/CC) and Well Fargo (my auto, home and savings are with WF).   I'm also a big fan of local credit unions, may want to go check out the ones near you.

I've had pretty good service with Chase too. As soon as they start charging all these fees I'm off to a CU.  I'm sure it's coming.

When building a new house 8 years ago, I went to the local bank for a bridge loan to finish construction on the new house (old house was paid off). We had banked with them for 26 years and with an excellent credit history, local yahoo treated me bad and offered a poor loan  offer, payable in 6 months and a $350 loan initiation fee. I went to the local credit union. Their offer was 1 1/2 percent cheaper interest, no loan initiation fee and the contract was open ended until we sold the old house. I went back to the bank and said I would stay with them if they matched the CU. President told to get the loan from the CU. I did that taking checking, savings and everything else with me. Credit Union frequently has free cookies and coffee. Never got that at the bank.
