I'm a semi driver. These are on the air tanks of our trucks and trailers. On pre-trip you give the wire a yank and blow moisture out of the tanks.

I've always wanted to get one for my air compressor at home. Just don't know what its called or where to look. Any ideas? Also, if any of you work on trucks or trailers and can get your hands on one let me know please.

That is a manually operated air tank drain. Some have a cable which means that you don't have to crawl under the tractor to drain the tanks. Other valves you have to crawl under and give them a twist, blowing water and sometimes oil all over your arm. Ask me how I know.

One can also get automatic air tank drains.

All air compressors have an air release valve, don't they?

I went to walmart and got a few keyrings and attached it to

the air release valve so it doesn't hurt my finger when I bleed the air from the tank.

Oh, and don't forget to fill your propane tank.

I use a ball valve.

When I'm ready to drain I unroll the hose, put my foot on the end of it and open the valve.

Yes they do. My drain valve is on the bottom of the tank and is the screw type. I need a pair of pliers to turn the stupid thing. It's a pain to get down there and there is hardly any room because the legs are in the way. Plus as viator said the crap shoots all over my arm and in my face. Because of this I hardly drain the thing which isn't good.

Thanks for the reminder. As a matter of fact it was just filled today. I'll go update my sig.

Yes, but the cheaper tanks suck and the cord will break and you'll never be able to open it again.

That's why you have a tractor protection valve at the back of that cab. Be thankful it's there.

Any Truck dealer has what you are seeking. Common as it gets.

Air drain valve. Why buy one at the supply house you gets parts for your truck from? Or ask a mechanic from your fleet service to order you one. I bet grainger sells the damn things. They seem to have every part and piece for anything I can think of.

Your compressor should have a ball valve on the bottom of its tank already. You can also buy a generic water seperator from grainger, northern tool , Harbor freight etc. U can find fairly cheap ones if you dont buy ingersol rand brand.

In commercial applications they make automatic drains that are set on a timer.. Most use a ball valve because it is a lot cheaper. If you check at Grainger, under compressors you will find them under pop off valves.

Man, that's a great idea...much better than putting a damned cake pan under it and opening-up the valve.

Change your air dryer cartridge and you will have almost no water in your system and also change your purge valve when you do it Uou can thank me later

Second time I've had it happen this year. Big cloud of white smoke, trailer fish tailing all over the place, and 4 wheelers freaking the fuck out. That trailer got 4 new tires.

I know it's common, was just looking for actual name to try and find it on-line.

I didnt read through all the responses but I am a truck mechanic and u can get that same purge valve at any napa store or you can go to any truck dealership or trailer shop and buy it also..If it where me I would use a good ball valve, it will do you a much better job..And you can leave the ball valve open when compressor isnt in use..

I just replace that style of drain valve on my compressor. I installed a 1/4 ball valve. I got tired of little pieces of rust getting stuck in the spring loaded valve and hissing.

i am a UPS mechanic. after working on them for a while you get to know what they look like. the rubrail that was de-burred screams UPS and the gray trailer and black chassis looked UPS also. plus not many places run doubles.
