Huntsville police chief: Immigration ruling unclear, law won't be enforced yet
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Huntsville Police Chief Mark Hudson said Wednesday afternoon that a federal judge's ruling upholding policing sections of Alabama's new immigration law is unclear and the law will not be immediately enforced. UA students protest Alabama immigration law (gallery, video)
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama –– Hundreds of University of Alabama students gathered to observe and participate in a protest against the states' new immigration law. It was a timely demonstration, occurring just as a federal judge in Birmingham prepared to release a ruling that upheld most segments of the new legislation. An organization called Students for a Democratic Society organized the rally, and students with pickets and other protest materials stood on a mound in the middle of the Ferguson Center Promenade on campus. The Huntsville Times reports that a Birmingham federal judge today upheld most sections of the new immigration law, as U.S. District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn ruled on a U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit seeking to block the law. This case only involved the legality of the state to enforce it's on law in regards to the feds rights. There is another pending case regarding the illegals civil rights coming up.

Like you said, I can imagine some non UTCs being written and that's probably going to be the extent of it. There's just no money to hold them, and the Feds don't want to help the states out. Funny thing is these new state laws are pretty much a mirror of the federal laws. |

FOLEY, Alabama –– Many of the 223 Hispanic students at Foley Elementary came to school Thursday crying and afraid, said Principal Bill Lawrence. Nineteen of them withdrew, and another 39 were absent, Lawrence said, the day after a federal judge upheld Alabama’s strict new immigration law, which authorizes law enforcement to detain people suspected of not being U.S. citizens and requires schools to ask new enrollees for a copy of their birth certificate. That is when it will get very interesting. So the employment part of it does not start till then. However from this date forward they can no longer get car tags in AL. |
