Actually I found it was introduced in 1901. Self cocking. Holding 8 rounds.

I thought revolvers are automatically semi-auto. You don't have to cock, extract, all that manually after every round.

Revolvers are single action or double action. This revolver is special in that it cocks the hammer for you like in a Semi-Auto-pistol. the upper portion actually slides back on the lower frame and cocks the hammer and rotates the cylinder.

Ahhh, but you had to pull the trigger to cock the hammer and rotate the cylinder for every shot, with the Webley-Fosbery the top portion of the revolver operated just like a slide on an automatic pistol. |

John Huston's 1940 film of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, the term was used correctly when Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) is shown an odd-looking revolver that has just been used in a murder and questioned if it's a Webley. His response is "Yeah. Webley-Fosbery .45 automatic. Eight shot. Don't make 'em anymore."
