American Airlines pilot faces misdemeanors for gun in bag

SAN DIEGO (AP) City prosecutors on Friday charged an American Airlines pilot with two misdemeanors for allegedly trying to pass a loaded gun through security in his carry-on.

William F. Blaylock, of San Diego, is scheduled to be arraigned next week.

At the time, a federal security chief said Blaylock told authorities he had been hunting and had taken the gun with him for personal protection. Blaylock said he forgot to remove the weapon.

Blaylock was charged with carrying a loaded firearm, a state penal code violation, and carrying a weapon in an airport, a violation of San Diego Unified Port District code. The district operates Lindbergh Field airport.

The misdemeanors are punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and a term of up to one year in San Diego County jail.

A Harbor Police report does not state whether Blaylock was boarding the plane at Lindbergh Field on April 23 as a passenger or to pilot an airliner.

An aide to Blaylock's attorney, Robert Grimes, said it was too early to comment on the case. Blaylock has been free on bond since April 24.

American Airlines representatives at Dallas headquarters declined comment. It is not known whether Blaylock was placed on leave.
