It would be nice if they could clear away the ground cover and see if there are any drag marks or even footprints after all this time.

Too bad it was handled as a simple missing person case until so much time had passed.

I don't know much about searches, but it seems like infrared should have picked up something.

The investigators should have learned that song.  Then they could put the whole case together.  It would have to be more scientific than they methods they're using now.z
