I was thinking of makeing some myself, I was going to use those rail plates off of railroad ties for the gong. Ever since the rail road went to the concrete ties there are thousands of the things lying around and best of all they're free! In the center they are around a half inch thick tapering down to around a quarter at either end.

For AR's i would say 3/4" or better should last a while. Our gongs came from a heavy indusrial crane plant and some are 4" thick but most are 1 to 2" and they've held up very well. if i were you however i would get whatever is around and blast the hell out of it. That free stuff is always the best....Dick

Anything you can get for free would work(at least for awhile). That steel plate used for road work is at least 1in thick and is probably a good grade.I've used 1 to 1.5 in thick and it usually lasts a few years at my range. They're set at 200 and 300 meters. At that distance 223 doesn't do anything---308 and 30-06 dent them a bit---AP and belted mags will crater them---and 50BMG will whoop-ass! Some of the longest lasting ones have been made from car axles.They are almost bullet proof!

For 200 meters I use 8 inch.
For 300 I use 12 inch. |

"Slugs" cut from various types of boiler plate with a plasma cutter are very good to use. They can usually be scrounged for the cost of scrap at metal fabrication plants. Often you have to know someone. I went to one locally and found out the owners are shooters and they went WAY out of their way to help. The owner's son went dumpster diving for me and found some 6" stainless circles to make falling plates that were about 3/4" thick and tough as all get out. They just splattered 9mm and it left a silver mark but no crater. I also got a hard stainless gong plate about 24" in dia. which just leaves marks but no craters with .223 as long as over 100 yards. Total cost? $10.00. The railroad irons may cause ricochets due to the irregular surface. I liberate them too and use them for various things. This kind of thing sure is fun, especially compared to shooting holes in paper with newbies. Water jugs can't be beat.

I use the "Beast" rifle gong which is about 1/4" thick of armor plating. I've sliced holes though 0.2 thick steel like it was so much hot butter. From the hull of my ship I've brought home penetration cuts of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 inches thick - none could be shot though even using .30-06.

What ever you use, hang it from chains or cable. If you mount it hard it wont last as long or make a purdy clankin sound. The harder the better is usually true if you want maximun sound but harder means more brittle usually. If you can get some old grader blade or mole boards from a plow you will have some good stuff for a gong. Here is something fun to do. Shoot some 1 to 1 1/2 inch aluminum plate with a .223 FMJ and let your buddies guess what made that godawfull hole. 3/4 inch lead with a .22 longrifle makes a statement also. Have fun.

We tried chains and cables-ARs ect eat them up-try 1/2" steel turned sideways and welded. ours have been hanging for years. If you want to see what an asteroid looks like you should take a picture of our gongs. looks like was hitwith worst meteorite storm you can imagine.

The club I shoot at uses the tread plates from bull dozer track. It's the only thing that they have found that holds up at our shoots.
