Could you a little help here...

I have access to all the water a person would desire.  One small problem.  It's salt water.

Does anyone have knowledge of a simple, efficient way to desalinate it?[0j]

What sort of volume do you want to desalinate?  Five liters a day?  Five hundred liters a day?

A minimum of 5 gallons per day...

By efficient do you mean cheap, or easy?

Cheap:  Look into survival manuals for solar still designs.  

Simple: Go to a yachting supplier and look into portable desalinization plants used by long distance sailors and as survival kit on well appointed boats.  PUR started their company on such business.

Reverse Osmosis filters can handle this, but in full-on ocean water they won't last long.

In practice municipalities are really the only ones who can afford to supply their entire water needs via desalinization, and they avoid the expense when possible.  But for a survival SHTF solution, especially for a short term scenario, a family can make it work.  

Oh, something else:

Consider rainbarrels.

Gather foodsafe plastic barrels and clean them out well with soap and water then bleach. Set them up so that water running off your roof is caught in them.  This water can be filtered fairly conventionally to produce potable water, and can be used for cleaning and such as is.

Lee Valley Tools sells a variety fo rainbarrel hardware attachments including spigots, rain gutter diverters and solutions for daisy chaining rainbarrels together in series. It's in thier gardening section.  

As I recall, Virginia has an abundance of rain, especially in the Summer. All you need is a method of gathering it up and storing it. Much simpler than seawater.
