If it's slipping it's either needs replaced or adjusted if possible on that vehicle.

I'm not sure about the 1999, but many of the Subarus had a manually adjusted clutch. If it is hydraulic (instead of cable operated) than it is self adjusting and it is either stuck or worn.
If it is cable operated you can find the cable and follow it to where it is mounted on a bracket on the engine (top rear of engine is where I have seen them). I believe you need a 10mm and a 12 or 13mm wrench to adjust it. |

Thanks for the replies. Shadowblade, do you know how I can tell how much of the clutch is remaining? I know that it needs adjustment because there is very little play in the pedal. I'm most concerned about the amount of clutch I have left. Thanks in advance.

When you run out of adjustment you need a new clutch.

Unless there is an inspection window in the bell housing the only sure way to check the clutch plate for wear is to remove it. Even if there was a window..you wouldn't be able to see the clutch plate as it is sandwiched between the flywheel and pressure plate.

None the less if you are this unfamiliar with the mechanics of it, you will probably need a professional. They will probably tell you need a new cluth rather than adjustment.
