A bunch of civil libertarians and geeks are working on an operating system that will allow secure private communications between individuals without the possiblity of interception by the government. Files are not stored on the computer (they can't be stored) so siezing the computer is wasted time.

m-o-o-t will consist of one CD which will boot on as many computers as possible. There will be a suite of email, w/p, spreadsheet, graphics etc programs on the CD. Access to local storage (hard drives etc.) will be disabled, and the system will shut down if the CD is removed. Data and mail will be transmitted and stored in encrypted form split between off-shore data havens.

m-o-o-t will not be compatible with any other security software. m-o-o-t will not interfere with the normal use of the computer.

It will be secure (with the usual caveats about security) against RIPA, Carnivore, the Australian and proposed Council of Europe and NZ laws regarding seizure of stored data, intercepted data, traffic data and access to plaintext/keys of encrypted data.

These guys are thinking outside the box. The problem I see is the ability to support a wide range of communications like dial-up modems, ISDN, cable modems etc. without the ability to add drivers to their system. No web browser as they say it’s impossible to do one securely (doesn’t Microsoft know that!).

It sounds like a good idea, but really, how long before somebody exploits a "hole" in this new OS? I agree that these guys are approaching the problem from a different angle than most, and I hope that they succeed.

As for me, I'll stick with PGP for the time being. The feds are going to waste a hell of a lot of time decrypting my email. Think of the national security implications of me asking my brother (through encrypted email) how his daughter is doing in math class. [}:)]

F*** 'em, if they want to waste their time and my money to gather that kind of "intel".

If there's a hole, then they'll fix it in the next release. That's how these projects go. Lots of thought put into the design, lots of verification, and lots of testing; repeat forever.

However, considering how little information is given on their website, not to mention their distrust of all current protocols, I'm not so sure that they're for real. Their beta release was supposed to have been finished almost a year ago, but there aren't any indications of it (no "download" page), and this also leads me to believe that they haven't updated their website in at least a year either.
