I have to hit the hospital door at 0545 hours.  I'm first one in my OR for a gastric bypass.  I've been heavy for years, it was starting to take a toll, and I don't plan on dropping dead like my Dad did.  So, I'm going for it.

Liquid Diet for the last three weeks was bad, but nothing but water or broth, ONE OUNCE at a time for the next week should be interesting.  Not sure how anyone stays hydrated drinking like that.

I've got 100-120 pounds to go.  Wish me luck, or at least a hot looking nurse...

Just when they first build the new stomach.  You start upping the amount in a week or two, but at first it does seem awfully small.

Sippy-Cup, anyone?

Good luck!

Ask the nurse to write down what crazy shut you say when you start coming out of the drugs.

Hope it all goes well and you reach your goal.

You'll stay hydrated enough because there's plenty of water in fat and you won't be up and about.

My doctor refused to refer me to a Gastric specialist. She has had several people she knew die from complications from their body not getting enough nutrients and essentially starving to death. So she scared me out of doing it.   So far I have lost almost 30# by eliminating all pop and drinking only water and lemonade. I eat a turkey sandwich every day for lunch and eat only one serving for dinner no going back for seconds. I have a real rough time losing weight because of my previous back injury and surgery keeping my back in constant pain keeps me from being active any more. I was at 347 I am now down to 315. I know I have a long way to go but I am trying.  Before my back fuck up I was at a constant 210-220 at 6' tall/.

We're in the same boat, back wise.  I was told mine would never heal until I dropped the weight.  Since the accident, it's only gone up.  I'm tired of hurting, and cutting out soda did help, but not much.  Knees are going from having worked medics, so for now, until I lose the weight, the gym is not really an option.  So, I'm going the hard way, and dealing with the malabsorbtion, which I'm told goes away in a few years.  By then, if your habits aren't changed, and set in their new ways, it's on you.

My fiancee had it done two years ago, lost her weight, and kept it off.  Now it's my turn.  So, we'll see.

If you are serious about losing weight then there is no need to do anything drastic like surgery.
I doubt I will be able to change your mind, but I lost 180 pounds myself without doing anything stupid like bypass surgery or spending useless time in a gym. There are many people here who would be glad to help you and give you real advice, myself included. You just need to keep an open mind and actually want to lose weight.

My problem has always been that I am a stress-eater, and I cheat.  A lot.  The nice side effect of the surgery is called "Dumping".  My GF suffers from it when she cheats.  Have a soft pretzel?  After all, we live near enough to Philly.  Buuuuut, half an hour later, she's doubled up, swearing she'll never do it again.  I need some invisible "Smite" button to kick my ass when I try to cheat.  I've tried everything I can think of.  Atkins worked, but gave me horrible diarrhea, and dehydrated me something fierce.  South Beach, didn't seem to do a thing.

Finding out I was a diabetic was the last straw.  A lot of things people suggested involved stuff that might have sugar, which is out.  I'm trying to avoid artificial sweeteners altogether, but with limited luck.  Water, and those Splenda drink mixes have kept me away from carbonated stuff.   Using my CPAP religiously has helped a lot of other problems, but as my weight varies, the pressures keeping needing to be changed.

Four hours until check-in, guess I should at least TRY to nap.    Thanks, though.  I'm glad you were able to lose it.  Even smoking didn't help me keep the weight down.  Some appetite suppressant Nicotine turned out to be.  (No, not why I started, Stress, remember?)

Thanks everyone, be back in a week or so.

I am back home already.  Tests show the new stomach is good, no leaks, and I'm on clear liquids for a week.  Then, I get better soup, full liquids, stuff like that.  Coffee might be a while, like 6-9 months.

Surgery wasn't as bad as I thought, they WERE able to do Laproscopic, so I only have 6 little holes in me.  Good times...

Pain meds SO rock...

Please take your vitamins and b12 injections.  Gastric Bypass has more systemic and irreversible deadly side effects if you do not get enough protein and nutrition.  Good luck.

6 days out.  I am drinking quite easily, apparently, the new exit to my stomach allows liquids to run right through.  Jello, of all things, can clog me up a little, and make me feel VERY full.  I'm still on "Clear Liquids Only" until tomorrow, after the Dr's visit, when I go to "Full Liquids", which means soups (but no chunks), and things like EAS protein shakes.

I feel good, all the IV water weight is gone, and I'm down to 303 so, I feel like something is starting to work.

I'm not allowed to have coffee for MONTHS, but most teas are okay.  Constant Comment, an orange tea, is pretty good.

So far, so good.

Good luck with the bypass, OP. I went the Band route, because there are a LOT less complications both with the surgery, and later on in life as a result.

With the bypass, you will likely not be able to enjoy things with real sugars in them. Dumping syndrome is a bitch. Make sure you keep up on your vitamins, every day, you will find that you end up taking a TON of them to keep from getting malnutrition. Take them slowly throughout the whole day.

Some people are just stuck with the weight. I ate healthy, and resonable amounts every day for years, but put on pounds no matter what I did. I was always very active, even when I got really big. I spent two years with a doctor and nutritionist watching me like fucking hawks, and they could not figure out what the issue was. I had quit sodas, and we never really were prone to keeping snackfood around so that was not a problem. Eventually they told me to have the band. It helped, but even with the band and the four-ounce meals (only three a day) consisting mainly of protein, and supplemented with a ton of powdered vitamin supplements I still sometimes mysteriously fluctuate upwards in weight.

So, in short, fuck off with your ASSumptions.

Well....  I have a friend (or kinda HAD now) that had Gastric bypass.  It's been a nightmare for him.  First he had a leak.  Another surgery to fix the leak.  It wasn't cleaned up properly and went septic.  He nearly died from that.  Now that the immediate complications are over, he deals the "normal" issues.  He has a hard time getting enough vitamins absorbed.  He suffers from "dumping syndrone."  He's sick and lethargic all the time.  His life revolves around his sensitivities to foods and his requirements.  He's only in his 40's.

The up side is he is no longer diabetic.

Keep in mind that the mortality rate (within 3 years of the surgery) is nearly 1 in 200 (found that out when trying to talk him out of this surgery).

A lap band is a the right choice for most people if they really want or need surgery.    It's not as effective, but it has FAR fewer side effects and is easily reversible.

So, you have no will power, you can't stick to a diet, you cheat, and you expect this to work?  I'm not going to be a dick and wish ill on you, but for guys like you, long term, this rarely works.  Just closing your stomach so you physically can't put as much Philly cheese steak in it doesn't require any effort, learning, or reprogramming on your part.  Without that, relapse is almost inevitable.

Obesity is mostly a mental disorder.  Unless you fix whatever caused you to get fat in the first place, you're doomed to failure.  A bypass doesn't fix the root cause, it only alters the end effect.

That said, in five, ten, or twenty years, I'd love to see you make me eat crow, but from what I've seen, you're just looking for the cheap way out.
