...DVDs that had half of the movie on one side and the rest of the movie on the other?
Damn, I hate watching a movie I hadn't seen in years only to find out that I have to turn the disc over to watch the rest of the movie. |

I remember that huge freaking answering machine we had back in the '70s. One tape for your message, one tape for the people calling you to leave a message on.
Being one of the first in our neighborhood to get cable TV. That was a huge deal. All the neighbors coming over every night for a week to check it out to see if it was worth it to get it. |

Whippersnappers; when I was a lad we had a Philco Television with a tiny screen.
The set itself was the size of a small Fridgidaire or Kelvinator. When we finally got a 16" Dumont everyone said it was like sitting in the theater; black and white of course. |

yep, we had 3 B&W channels on our single TV and the only thing worth watching was Mr. Cartoon for 1/2 hour after school and Disney for an hour on Sunday nights. My Dad still uses the first electric calculator I ever saw and it is the size of waffle iron. It has 9 functions only and cost him almost $700. It was cool as hell at the time though.

First post nails it
I remember going out to rent tapes when my cheap dad finally bought a VCR. I mistakenly rented from the "Betamax" section of the shop and was like "WTF?" when I got home. Slightly OT (but has to do with being old), I had to take my 4yo daughter to the eye dr. today. Some months ago she failed her eye test at the pediatrician, so she had to go for possible amblyopia. Anyway, she's just starting to read so instead of using the letter chart while in the chair, they used stencil-like pictograms. Well, one of them was of a telephone..from my generation. She kept calling it a "chair" (it did kind of look like one) and we had to explain it to her that it was an "old fashioned" phone. Oh, her eyes are perfect too. |

Of course, around the holidays, the classics would get played on TV. (as in broadcast TV....there was no 'cable') Amazing to think that in my 4 decades I've seen the world go from basic rudimentary electric devices to smart phones and iPads. Hell....our TV set was B&W when I was a kid....when we got a color TV is was a big deal
How many here remember when the radio manufacturers were boasting 'transistor radio' in the circulars for the new 'non-tube', handheld radio receivers? |

You young guys do realize that TVs haven't alway had remote controls, right? Actually, I was the remote control when I was young. My dad would throw something at me and say "Hey you, get up and go change the channel."

I remember the time before VCRs and when they did come out, you had physically wind the tape around the reel. I remember when TV broadcasting actually shut off at night and the stationed signed off with the national anthem. I remember candy cigarettes. I remember that if you wanted popcorn, you got out a big kettle a popped it on the stove top. I remember when they first came out with cable TV and they wanted $20 a month for it. That was ridiculous. I remember as a boy seeing gas for 29.9 cents per gallon and a guy would come bouncing out of the station to pump it for you. I remember my mother complaining about how "she had to put five dollars into that gas tank!" I remember turning on the TV and having to wait for it to warm up before you could see what was on. I remember when we had a telephone party line. No, not a 1-800 chat-line, but a phone line that was shared with neighbors. You would pick up the phone and if you heard someone talking on it, you had to hang up and wait for them to hang up before you could use it. You never said any secrets on a party line also because you didn't know who was listening in. |
