... can we expect to see any increased radiation over here?

I just read this article:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/kashmir/Story/0,2763,726489,00.html

The authors sure make it sound like they're going to hit the button at any minute.

Sounds like this would be the perfect situation for krazy akbar to get the world vs. islam war a rolling. Do they (meaning the islamic nutjobs) have anything they could launch that would appear to the indians to be a nuke missile?

Dunno, what do you mean by "islamic bomb".

Upon seeing a launch, the Indians have about 8 minutes to react before it impacts. Just thinking that even if they didn't have a nuke, if krazy akbar and co. could send up something that, while in the air, would look like one, maybe they could get the indians to launch thereby starting the islam vs. the rest of the world war that they seem to desire.

The answer depends on alot of things. How many nukes, yield, ground burst vs air burst, type of nukes, prevailing winds and other weather questions. We will see some radiation, no question. Question is, how much.

Hopefully if they go "live", all the nukes they set off will knock the world of its axis, and we'll all die.  Lots of problems solved.

Yeah, sure we will be able to detect their weapons. Air sampling is one of the things we do to make sure no one is violating the test ban treaty.

But the fact that we can measure such things has more to do with how good our instruments are than any danger posed by their radiation.

Most nuclear fallout is caused by soil particles containing metals that become radioactive after being hit by the free neutrons emitted in the nuclear reaction. To cause serious fallout this dust has to be lifted in large quantites into the atmosphere. Any nuke over 10kt can due this, at least according to the gurus at the Federation of American Scientists. However altitude isn't the only thing requried, QUANTITY of material is also required.  This is a big planet after all. Neither India or Pakaistan have enough bombs or big enough bombs to lift enough radioactive material to threaten us, or even threaten their neighbor China.

Predictions about global nuclear fallout were based on exchanges between the US and the USSR which had thousands of weapons. Between the two of us we had as many as a thousand weapons of over a Megaton alone ready to throw at each other. Just the inital nuclear exchange could have involved as many as a thousand warheads of all sizes. There is no possibility of that happening here between Pakistan and India as the two countries have nowhere near that number of weapons or anything nearly as big.

And the fact that a nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan WONT be the end of the world greatly increases the likelyhood of these two having a nuclear exchange.

Do the Muslims have anything that can be used to simulate a nuclear attack? Yes they do- EVERYTHING.  Neither India or Pakistan has a specific nuclear delivery system- they are fitting nuclear warheads and bombs to missiles and fighter bombers already in service. It will be impossible to tell if the inbounds are armed with conventional or nuclear weapons. The ranges are simply too close to require a ICBM or a long range bomber even if they could build one.

I think the threat is real and war is highly likely.  But I doubt nukes will be deployed.
I think the war will last years and involves artillery, ground forces, and airstrikes.  War will be localized too.  Most likely near the India-Pakistan border, specially around Kashmir region.  If nuke war begins, we might as well as kiss world peace goodbye.  We will enter our third world war if either side deploys nuke.

Very small correction. Fallout the radioactive components, mostly uranium and plutonium that get attached to dirt during the blasting apart of the bomb and then become airborn. Least that's what I remember. If you have more data, please enlighten.

Thanks,

Funny thing is that India never said anything about invading Pakistan...they want to enter Paki-controlled Kashmir to crush the militants (much like the IDF went into the West Bank last month) and then leave.  India (and we) all know that the Paki's support the militants.  Hell, all the networks have been reporting that Al-Q. has been massing in Pakistan...and they're doing nothing about it.
I fully support India's position, even if they ARE a bunch of nutcakes.  Both countries hate each other and are just itching to wipe out the other.  Let 'em.  We exploded over 100 weapons above ground right here in the US in New Mexico and we're all ok.  I'm sure a few nukes in Central Asia won't make much of a difference.  What's dangerous is a nuclear reactor explosion, like in Russia several years back.  That ruined crops and caused cancer in N. Europe.  The amount of nuclear material in a nuclear explosion is relatively small (unless you're in the blast area of course).
Maybe the world will wake up and then people like France (who suck at world cup soccer I might add) will quit building nuclear reactors in Iraq, Iran, India, etc...  They are greedy sons-of-bitches and have no scruples about putting a reactor in some loony country, who then tries to convert it to a weapons grade material source (like the one Israel demolished in Iraq back in '88).

Heard tell on FOX news that the Indians' biggest weapon is only 43 kilotons - a tiny little thing with a blast radius of just two miles, lethal radiation out to a few more miles.

It isn't the bang that is the problem, it is the flash that sets fire to things 20 miles away. Those things are giant firebombs.

If india and pak go live . . .

Then there will be a severe shortage of software programmers, that's for sure!
