Some of the best Tomcat flying scenes on film, IMO.

Somebody got the bright idea to use the movie's theme song as CVN 68's breakaway song. It still annoys me to hear it.

One of my favorite childhood movies, and I almost broke my neck snatching it out of
the $5.00 DVD rack at Walmart recently.

Unlike a lot of other movies, this was STILL a good movie almost 30 years later.

That was some of the best flying I've seen to date, right up to the part where  ___  ___  ____.

I haven't seen that movie since the early '80s, and fortunately it was still pretty good. A bit of cheese –– the XO 'losing it' a couple of times, but overall it aged well enough. Mostly. Some of the sailor's hair and mustaches looked decidedly ...odd.

The scene with the F-14 appearing out of the clouds behind the Zero was pretty danged awesome.

That is how they looked back then; even the airwing Marines had hair parted in the middle; many of the guys who wore glasses wore the submarine service (John Lennon style) glasses.

The flying shots were filmed in Key West.

Cool pics, Whamo, thanks for sharing!

I just watched that movie for the first time in 15 to 20 years.

It really was a love letter to the 1980's Navy.

I never served, but the attitude seemed "real" to me, chessy mustaches and beards and all.

I had a really stressful night at work recently (psych nurse) and decided to watch that when I came home.

I hadn't seen it since my dad (Cmdr, USN ret.) and I had watched it when it originally came out.  Brought back great memories of both my dad and the early '80s and I slept great after it.

What's up with the beards?  Is the clean shaven military a recent phenomenon?

PO3s and above were allowed to grow beards. Beards went away 1 Jan 85.

It's interesting to see how young Charles Durning looks in that picture considering he was a veteran of the Normandy invasion.  Well, that movie is rather old now...but time sure does fly.

I dunno, I found that aspect of the movie pretty intense.

The ability to win the whole Pacific war with one ship is just one pretty intriguing idea brought up.

Saw it in the theater with my Dad when it came out.

Wait, no comments on the old school M16s?   I remember thinking, "Wouldn't firing a rifle in an enclosed compartment hurt their ears?"
