CALGARY - Seven people were injured - one of them critically - when a group of croquet players and some baseball players ended up in a vicious bat-swinging, mallet-bashing brawl.

An argument between the two groups degenerated into the bone-crunching melee in a Calgary schoolyard Tuesday evening.

Three people had to be transported to hospital, police said.

A 31-year-old man received a life-threatening head injury after he was hit over the head with either a croquet mallet or baseball bat. A 35-year-old man was hit with a croquet mallet and had injuries to his head and arm, while a 20-year-old man suffered arm injuries.

Paramedics treated four other people at the scene.

Police said Wednesday they were still investigating the fight.
