A 19-year-old Alaska-based soldier from central Wisconsin is dead and two other soldiers wounded after their Stryker vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department says Pvt. Ryan J. Larson of Friendship, Wisc., died Wednesday in Kandahar Province.

Larson had been in the U.S. Army for only a year. The infantryman joined the Army last June and arrived at Fort Wainwright in October.

Larson and the two wounded soldiers were assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright. They deployed to Afghanistan with their 4,000-soldier brigade in April.

The two wounded soldiers were not seriously hurt.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says Larson "gave his life so that we may enjoy the blessings of a free society."

My point is, I get really pissed off how Ryan Dunn can crash his car after leaving a Bar and its all i see all over the internet and im sure it will be all over TV tonight.

I pisses me off how troops are treated in the country. Not mentioned in the news unless its a huge event. Let alone get 6 pages in GD

-Two soldiers died June 5, in Khost province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered as the result of a helicopter crash; they were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. Killed were Chief Warrant Officer Kenneth R. White, 35, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Chief Warrant Officer Bradley J. Gaudet, 31, of Gladewater, Texas.

-Four soldiers died of wounds suffered June 4, in Laghman province, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 793rd Military Police Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Killed were Sgt. Christopher R. Bell, 21, of Golden, Miss.; Sgt. Joshua D. Powell, 28, of Quitman, Texas; Spc. Devin A. Snyder, 20, of Cohocton, N.Y.; and Spc. Robert L. Voakes Jr., 21, of L'Anse, Mich. Voakes was posthumously promoted to specialist.

What is an American?

I have no idea who Ryan Dunn is but from the thread I can understand why.

I don't know any of the others listed but one of them, Chief Warrant Officer Bradley J. Gaudet, 31, is from my hometown and all of them are hero's in my opinion.

Since you asked, since millions of people have seen him on TVs and movies, they have heard his name, familiar with his work, and they are not necessarily feeling a personal loss, but they hate to see that happen to anyone.

Pretty simple.

That's not to take anything away from the great personal sacrifice of the soldier, but if it had been someone that was well known, it would have been all over the news ( just the same as Pat Tillman was ).

OP, when I saw the thread about Dunn, I asked myself...who? Then I dug a little deeper and found out who he was.
I did not know who he was. I honestly don't give a shit about Dunn's death other than to hope that no one else was killed or injured due to his or his companions stupidity.
I did not know any of the service members listed above, or any of their families.
The deaths of the troops listed bothers me very much, just like it always does when I read the names of the fallen.
Yes it is a fucked up world with fucked up priorities.

We lose people all the time who make vital contributions, soldiers, Doctors, scientists, but they don't sell advertising like celebrities.

Case in point: in the last week, we lost two of the greatest electrical engineers the country had.

If you weren't in the field, you would never know who they were. Other countries did.

Bob would travel to a different city every day, for months, teaching analog engineers the secrets of good design. These tours included Europe, India, and China.
Indeed, when Bob showed up at a Chinese meeting hall in 2004, the fire marshals had to intervene since almost 700 engineers came to hear what he had to say.

In all fairness, the Ryan Dunn thread is 7 pages of people who do and don't give a fuck about him arguing back and forth.

In this thread, there isn't any question of whether or not the men in the OP are important enough to care about.

Thread length isn't necessarily indicative of the quality of content, more often than not it just means there's something for people to argue about.
