I went from an E-5 to an E-4 then A month later to an E-3.  They seemed pissed I wouldn't re-enlist so they got me for something stupid to bust me down to an E-4 well I only had a couple months left so I started fucking with them.  They knocked me down to an E-3 about a week before I was Honorably Discharged [rolleyes]  I did have fun though and never regretted a single minute.

Ah...

a good friend of mine got busted for smoking hash.

It was just an Article 15.

He went on CDACT (don't ask me what that stands for) till he ETSed.

My second week in the navy I went to Captain's Mast for violation of Art. 92 UCMJ. Failure to obey an order. We weren't supposed to be drinking(yet!) I got a six month suspended bust and a $100 fine.

Lucky me.

E-3 to E-2...  took off on a duty day at OS 'A' school. The XO was giong to let me off cause it was a miscommunication, but the head of my duty section was a do-gooder ass clown and pleaded with her to screw me.

I punched him dead in the eye just before I left that school.  Funny, that never got back to me... and I still made E-5 in 3 years.

Know a guy who got busted for UA while onboard the Valdez. Didn’t show for muster for mess cranks, busted from E-3 to E-1. BTW when the mess decks master at arms found him he had taken a safety razor to his arms and was tossed out with a Big Chicken Deluxe.

Gunbert, when were you in Damnneck? I was there from Dec ’90 to April ‘91

Ok

It was late 1969 in Vietnam.  I had been in-country for about 30 months.  I was an E-6 on my first (and only) enlistment.  I extended my time in-country for another (and final) six months.  They gave you 30 days "free" leave back in the States for the extension.

I went home and really enjoyed my leave.  In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I stayed an additional 29 days.  29 days was AWOL, 30 days would have been desertion from a combat zone.

When I got back to Vietnam the battalion commander was pissed.  He busted me back to E-5 Sergeant.  I was out of the service a few months later.  I figure that 29 days of fun cost me about $75 in pay.

Made E3 twice, E4 twice, and after 8 years (five active, 3 reserve)was still a E4. How that happened is many a tale. But I am respectable now, and will not tell.

On our boat, crew of 125 or so, we had at the peak 41 (That is 41!) NJP's.  After that one, squadron told Tom Terrific to cut it out, and we had only about 33 the next month.

This is kinda skewed as Nukes protected their own, from 0-3 down to E-4.  Nukes were about 40% of the crew.

Most of the busts were suspended busts, or otherwise we would have a crew of E-1's, and the officers in the poorhouse - at least they had the option of donating 100 bucks to the Rec Fund instead of going to mast.

Did I say morale sucked?  We had to hide our "Bitch Book" to keep officers from writing in it.

I never got busted, but I sweated straight through a skivvy shirt and a Creighton while standing tall before the man. My battalion commander dismissed the charges because everyone from my section chief to my company commander to the battalion Sergeant Major was there to testify on my behalf.

To quote my company commander, Captain Bryant, "When I was a Corporal, if an officer tried to use his ID card to get out of a fight he started, I'da tried to kill him."

Semper Fidelis, Sergeant Major Woods, wherever you are.

I was there a couple of years after you, Nov '93 - Feb '94.  I miss that place more than anything else I did in the Nav... Virginia beach was a blast, even in the winter!

Friend of mine got busted from LCPL to PFC by a Navy Chief Petty Officer.  I was "chosen" to take his rifle and bayonette from him, all other NCO's were scared.  Weak Marine staff NCO didnt protect his troop from Navy Chief with an axe to grind.  New (boot) Lcpl's tried to mess with my buddy but I protected him.  They could not figure out why he could call me by my first name and not get thrashed for it.  Low rank does not equal new guy.

Possibly!  I'll be honest with ya... the whole thing was a blur.

Want to know what I do remember?  I was riding in the back of my buddy's jeep, top down with 3 new friends from A school, having been in Va. beach maybe a week.  Anyway, we're cruising up and down the strip looking for womenz, when I look over at the camaro keeping pace with us in the next lane.  There is this BEAUTIFUL gal in the passenger seat, and she is looking up at me, beaming, with a terrific smile on her face (I was in love and I'd seen her for 2 seconds)...  Then I realize why she's smiling.  She's not wearing a top, and is literally fondling her boobs for me to see!!  My jaw hit the floor (I really loved her now!)... and I yelled for my buddies "Eyes Left!"  Everyone looked and my bud John almost swerved into them.

We ended up chasing her around the strip all night and eventually cornered her in a backroad for a more private showing.  That was the night that I realized the Navy was the right choice!

My dad said he made corporal twice.

Honorably Discharged as PFC...

I just can't get anything more than incoherent bullshit as to why.

That explains me...

As an E6, I took a suspended bust and lost 1/2 a months pay for 2 months, all for standing up for my people and not allowing an O4 to dump on them. Funny thing about it was 30 days later I was the Sailor of the Quarter, and awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for superior performance of my duties. What a joke!

Made E-3 coming out of boot in great lakes.
The med officer orders a full round of bi-cellian shots for the whole base,we all go to the infirmary for these "bicillin" shots.
I said to the corpsman that was giving the shots to our company that the "bicillin" sounds an awful lot like penicillin, and he says yes it is a double shot of penicillin and tries to jab me with the needle,I am highly allergic to
penicillin and tell him that ,he says i am being a big baby and to stand still ,an Lt. comes over and demands that i stand still and says he does not believe me and that if i don't stand for the shot he will have me restrained.
I back away from what I know will kill me and they (now the corpsman the Lt. and two more
orderlies) are about to hold me down to get this shot.
I started swinging as if my life depended on it (and it did)I decked the Lt. and one of the orderlies before they subdued me.
At this point they take me to the brigg and then back to the infirmary, there they test me for an allergic reaction to penicillin and it tests positive.
I am brought before the captain (premast)and told my rights and that i am being charged with striking a commissioned officer(I guess it's OK to hit orderlies).
The captain looks over the whole report and dismisses the charges.
Now you want to know what this has to do with losing stripes, right?
Well you really didn't think that the good Lt. was going to let me get away with that punch square to his jaw did you?
He stayed on my ass until he got two of those stripes ,took about two months of writing me up on bullshit for him to get the two stripes, back to E-1.
It took me 6 months and one trip to see the same captain to get them back.
That Lt. actually told me the day i hit him that i was going to portsmith Naval prison.

I almost forgot, they gave me a nice shiney red dog tag after that.

I was never busted (threatened), but I have a funny story or two to relate.

The first ship I was on was kind of a throwback to the old Navy. The XO was a kind of down-to-Earth guy. He liked to have a beer and chase his women like the rest of us. Consequently, he generally handled things at his level rather than let an otherwise good sailor's career get fucked up over what was more or less a minor incident.

When we were in PI, we were moored at NAVMAG Subic Bay (I was on an ammunition ship) and we had to ride a bus from over near the Spanish Gate to the ship. The last night of liberty on the way over on WESTPAC we have to be back at midnight. There was this redneck HT2 who was something of a cutup and this black undesignated seaman who had a somewhat negative militant view of the world. (Stay with me, it gets good.) At midnight on the last night of liberty, everybody's had a few San Miguels too many, a pitcher of Mojo, a pitcher of Bullfrog, and a "short time." So this seaman is talking to one of his buddys in Deck about Barry White. The HT2 is listening and says, "I'll show you a bare white ass!" and moons him, or rather, pulls his pants down and sticks his ass in his face. The seaman wants to fight and starts swinging. A chief jumps in the middle and gets punched and the HT2 just sits there laughing as we pull into the Marine gate at NAVMAG. The seaman goes to the MAA's office the next day and files a report against the HT2 and the chief files one against the seaman. These guys go to CPOI and then XOI. (Stay with me.) Instead of referring the whole thing to Captain's Mast, the XO calls EVERYONE to the wardroom who was on the bus. He hears the seaman's side of the story, the HT2's, and the chief's. The XO then chews out everyone in the wardroom for "...letting these men down. They're your shipmates and as shipmates you all should be ashamed of yourselves for letting them fight." The XO then dismisses the charges conditionally: the next liberty port the HT2 and seaman are ordered to go on liberty together, escorted by a representative of the MAA's office. We got to Mombassa, Kenya and things were tense between these two guys. At any rate, after a little while on liberty, they warmed up to each other, drank a little beer and got to be pretty good friends.

I always thought that that was a smart thing on the part of the XO. He disciplined these guys, maintained crew unity, and no one's career got messed up over one nitwit incident.

572 frontline engineers, first cav korea 1964.  Made pfc early for stopping sucking self inflicted chest wound with cigarette cellophane(not mine of course) but lost it two days later as you can not (in peace time )make PFC until 13 months in service.

Being the only man in unit that could type, took over company couriers, mail clerk, first sergeants driver job.    No reveille, guard duty always under arms had my own three quarter ton.

So after I dropped the first sarge off at his whores hooch ,I was off to CC1 or CC2 with more or less my own vehicle.   The problem was I was only 5 feet eleven(197) the first sarge 6'2 and 275.

We had to be across the Imgim river before 12;00 or you didn't get across.  I came to pick him up at 11:30 and couldn't (literally) carry his big drunk ass up.  So had to stay overnight in the village and miss bed check.

We went across in the morning, and every thing was hunky dorrie with him,but he and the CO told me that nothing was going to be done to me ,except I would not get the speedy four that came with my job.

I had already made my mind up that I was getting out of this mans Army, so no big deal. Still had all the percs just no rank.  By the way my discharge papers have my rank as PVT(P),meaning permanent grade.

Bad thing is that it looks as I didn't make much of the three years I spent there, but it takes a full bird COL to bust you if you are (P) rank.  So when I got to Fort Campbell My faded fatigues had that huge hideous first Cav image with little circle A patch in the middle.

All in all I wouldn't take anything for that three years of my life.  Yobo Sayo.

Bob   [:D]   ( Edited to say had to wake the first sarge to tell him the president had been shot,at first no one would believe me, sad times all around.)

I was charmed thoughout my 4 in the Corps and made Sergeant.

I had a real prick SSGT as my NCOIC for awhile.  He got busted for weed and I ended up being his boss for the last 6 months of my tour.

Thank you God, that is such a great memory.
