Today I learned a valuable lesson.  Don't run from the cops.  I was hanging out with my fraternity brothers tonight, just messing around.  We decided to go out on campus and have some fun.  We started climbing alot of campus buildings and walking around on rooftops.  After we got down from one of the buildings, somebody yelled security.  The four of us took off.  I ran right into the path of one of the security guards who told me to get down on my knees.  I complied.  I looked around and I could here rattling of metal on metal as my other friends were being chased.  I also noticed that nobody was around other than the guy standing next to me.  I popped up and took off.  He yelled, "stop" and grabbed at me.  He missed by a solid three feet.  I had a good jump on him.  He chatted away on his radio and suddenly the campus lit up with University Circle Police--the ligitimate police force.  I was running on total instinct.  I graduated a couple years ago, and some significant building changes from the old campus where I studied made it difficult to figure out exacly where I was.  Luckily, I was a pretty fast runner.  Earlier this year, I had a severe high ankle sprain that cut my college wrestling career short (different college--just in case you were wondering).  In Febuary, I could run two miles in 10min15sec.  I have not been able to run well lately.  My average mile time is around 8min.  Regardless of my weak ankle, I had enough jets to burn these guys in a comical way.  I was just leaving them in the dust.  Even a cop car that hammered the brakes to cut me off and the two officers that jumped out were quickly distant figures way behind me.  They were coming at me in all directions though.  One had an angle on me, but as I hurdled a concrete barrier, his foot barely caught the edge and he went for a tumble.  I was running parallel to a street called mayflower when a car on that street had an officer intercept me.  I blew right by him.  He started yelling, "F'n stop or I'll shoot you mother F'er.  I will shoot you in the back of the head."  I looked back and then took a fall of my own.  The grass was wet, and my new balances just lost hold.  I really think that this was the turning point.  My glasses fell off my face, and there was no way I could find them.  It was dark, and I had below average night vision.  

You can't out run the Radio.

The guy was probably twenty meters behing me with his gun drawn.  I really couldn't tell if he was running or just aiming.  My vision absolutely sucks without my glasses--20/100 on a good day.  I couldn't see exactly how many cops were around me as the same guy was yelling that he was going to shoot me.  The decision to yeild came instinctively.  I just became 100% submissive.  I put my hands up and laid down.  With his foot square on my back, they cuffed me and told me how stupid "that" was.   One of the first things that I noticed is that it is very easy to get up off the ground even cuffed.  The guy on the show "cops" always seem to have a hard time with that.  They stuck me in the squad car and started interigating me before reading me my rights.  They asked me who I was with.  All three of them got away clean.  All the cops ignored them when I took off.  They pushed me for answers but I didn't give them squat until my buddy showed up.  He had gotten away clean, but decided to back me up.  Marines, it probably won't be the last time one of them saves my ass.  Anyhow, he explained what happened, so they gave me a written warning for criminal tresspass.  They took a picture of me and had me sign a ticket.  They told me that if I ever was back on campus, I would be arrested for criminal tresspass.  Back when I was still sitting in the squad car the fellow that told me that he would shoot me in the back of the head asked me if I was a gambler.  He obviously saw all the casino Player's VIP cards in my wallet.  I said, "yes."  He told me that I took a big gamble tonight because he was going to shoot me for "running like that" and "having something in my hands like that."  My hands were empty the whole time.  I don't know how close my "meeting with the reaper" really was, but I know of how stupid and juvenile running was.  Q:WTF were they going to do to me had I not run?  A:Not a damn thing.  Part of me thinks of how close I was to getting away.  The other part thinks of how much I risked for so little potential gain.  This would have killed my mother if I died or had been arrested.  My career in the Navy would have been over before it had begun.  I am assuming that running from the cops is a felony.  I have been aspiring to be a seal for some time.  I had the Naval Special Warfare Officer billet (OCS) which is  granted to civilians only about 10-12 times per year in my grasp before I sprained my ankle, and just risked fukking that up completely.  I am just jacked up on adrenaline right now, and may have missed a few details, but I definitly understand the big picture.  Don't make it worse by running.  Even though I was faster, stronger, and more determined than any of those guys, a quick slip could have sent my life on a downward spiraL.

Most states I've heard including Texas evading on foot is just a misdemeanor charge.  Lucky for you they didn't charge you.  

That was dumb...don't do that again.  

P.S.  You'd be amazed how people running from the police can bounce off the front of patrol cars and not be hurt at all.  That's what I've been told.  

Good thing that wasn't in Boston, cuz they would have shot you without telling you.

In California is is at least CPC148 Resist,obstruct,delay and officer (a misdemeanor).  There is a long list of other charges that can start piling up though. Especially if someone is injured as a result of your fleeing.

Ditto, blind or not, you owed it to yourself to come back with the "one that got away" type story for us.  I'm severely dissappointed you didn't take a bullet, atleast for the story!  Plus, their aim usually sucks, they might of hit you in the shin at worst!

the other night i was at a book store with a target next door, and at about 11pm (when the book store closed) we left and hung out in the parking lot.  we saw  a few left over target shopping carts so two of us hopped in a 2 others were pushing us around. some lady (who didnt work at either store) came out and said, "that is private property. if the police catch you they will take you away."  i was like, "no, they wont. they dont care." so the lady called the cops and they came out.  by this time we were just standing in a circle outside the front door of the book store (with some peeps holding books.)  the cops drove by and the lady was really P.O.ed.  we just stood there normally and did nothing.  they just waved at us and went on about there buisness.  the old bat was so mad she started yelling at us and then we left.  after i got in my car, i put down the windows and started to drive away. i was going over the speed limit a little, but not enough for her to do what she did.  as i passed her, i here, "hey you!  Slow down! You cant drive this fast in here!"  keep in mind she doesnt have any athority in the shopping area.  so i stoped near her and said, "Hey lady, when you become a police officer, then you can come talk to me about my driving.  untill then shove it!!"  so basically i have no problem with the cops, its just people who think they should enforce the law even if they are not cops.

Shotar, thanks for the heads up.  I didn't really know what the maximum penalty was.  Most of the UCPD guys were pretty cool.  I just got off the phone with my buddy who came back to help me out.  They gave him the 3rd degree.  He will probably have to do some community service.  He will be getting some blue label Jack D's from me shortly.  

I found out some rediculous stuff from him today.  The officer that pulled the gun on me was telling some tall tales to the other officers.  He said that I had something in my hand.  This was onehundred percent untrue.  He may have saw something, but there was really nothing there.  He also said that he tackled me.  There was nothing remotely close to a tackle involved.  Even Ohio high school football does not credit a down ball tackle if the ballcarrier is untouched.  WTF was this guy thinking.  I guess he was trying to find and out for his gun being drawn.  This guys delusions have me a little salty, but I just want to get this behind me, and never let it happen again.

As for all the Einsteins that are so upset that I wasn't shot, you all suck.  That is really not cool to hope that I was shot.  I'll see you in hell.  

Quietshoes, class envy is pretty weak.  I should have been shot because my family has money?  Were you really jealous of the "frat boys" in your home town.  A lot of great american heros were from fraternities.  No offense, but you should stop blaming people with more than you, and start looking in the mirror.  I ended up at CWRU because I had great grades, a high SAT score, and a scholarship.  My parents didn't get any of those for me.  

Waverunner, I do live in the real world.  I have been going to school in Chicago.  I was just visiting some of my old friends back home.  I do that from time to time when I am back in Cleveland.  Don't you visit your buddies when you go back home?

Quietshoes, why the bitter streak?  You seem to have a bitterness toward me that I cannot comprehend.  How do you know that you can buy and sell me comfortably.  Does a masters in criminology pay that much?  My field is chemistry.  I passed on the liberal arts/social sciences degrees, though I find them interesting.  My occupation of choice will be service in the United States Navy.  

By the way, I have never smoked dope, and I rarely watch MTV (maybe once a month).  Some of my friends wear ballcaps as I do on occasion.  I was born and raised in the dogpound, and I love my San Antonio Spurs.  Only one of my friends is a slackedjawed redneck, but he is one of the nicest guys that I know.  He was the first in his family to go to college, and has really dug himself out of an underclass life.  I have never been to democratic underground and do not go on the assualtweb.whatever.  I have been a registered republican since 1996, and worked diligently on the Bush2000 campaign while still in Ohio.  

I think that you are very wrong about me.  Maybe that degree in criminolgy doesn't include making criminal profiles, or maybe you missed those classes while working to pay for your tuition.  I am sorry that you had such a hard-knock life.  I am glad that you fought through the turmoil of working though school; really, my heart is bleeding for you.

I'm with GC456 & prebans, give the guy a break!   It wasn't like he was harming anyone.  I know that I have run from the police many times (on a motorcycle) to avoid tickets & although it's not really a commendable act, it wasn't like either of us held someone up.

And saying that he should be shot, well that's just cold.

rick50, as you now realize, you were damned lucky to have learned such a valuable lesson at a very small cost.  The one thing I think you should take away from this is to ALWAYS do a simple risk analysis before acting.  The next time you and your friends consider such an escapade, you should ask yourself, "What's the very worst that can reasonably happen?  Is it worth that risk vs. the very best that can reasonably happen?".  In most cases, you'll likely find that the answer is no, it's not worth it.  [b]Edited to add:[/b] Especially when it only takes one mistake to end your dream of a Navy career.

It was dumb to run away, because what would have happened to you if they caught you for walking on the roof?  Not much, I bet.  

If you had warrants out on you for serious stuff, then it makes sense to run.  And that's why they brought everyone down on you, because who knows?  You might be wanted for murder or something, which explains why you're running from a bullshit petty violation.

A friend of mine's brother decided to play the run from cops sporting event for entertainment.
He thought it was funny until the cops got tired of chasing him and just cracked his skull, it wasn't so funny then. He got charged with some sort of criminal misconduct on city property. (took place at city park)
After he got out of the hospital and jail, he had to pay a fine and do community service.

First off, you'll never make the cut for Naval Special Warfare with bad vision.

I used to run from cops (never cought), try and pick fights with cops, and be a wise ass with cops.  All while drunk of course.  While underage.  It never seemed to bother them.  They just told me to go home and get some sleep.

It puzzles me a little.

With all of the juvinile name calling and piss poor attitudes, maybe its time to lock the thread, nothing good is coming out of this.  Pissing matches by adult juveniles are no fun anymore.
