There have been breeds the Middle East for a long time that have extremely light and/or no feathering on the neck, thighs and legs. Many of these adaptations were due to the high temperatures in the region and these breeds are more succesful than fully feathered strains. It appears that this bird was a product of breeding selection focused on feather coverage. It is also obvious that this is a bird with an extremely low yield in terms of muscle mass. While this makes a great whipping boy for PETA, this is obviously not an animal that has any value to commercial agriculture. It's a neat scientific oddity, but I doubt this fellows relatives will be feeding any significant number of people.
