It pains me to say it, but at one time it was easy to see that California was clearly the greatest American state. A long coastline for the surfers, taller alpine mountains than Colorado, more acres of roadless backcountry Forest Service wilderness than Montana or Idaho, a vast empty Mojave desert for shooting and 4x4 adventuring, great cities like LA and the Bay Area, Hollywood, the high-tech and aviation industries, the number one agricultural state, home to the best and biggest military bases, a red-state that produced governors like Ronald Reagan.....
However, all that is ruined by lefty voters, bad goverment policy, restrictive laws, unrestricted immigration, over-population in some areas and general malaise. What's the greatest state now? There are no obvious contenders. |

Oh shit...where is my popcorn? x2 In before the shitstorm. ETA: OP, you live in fucking Arizona. |

Quoted: In his defence, he did only say that it used to be great. I'm sure it is a lovely place, aside from the scummy big cities and the politics.Oh shit...where is my popcorn? |

California is a beautiful state, it's just been made a horrible place to reside due to the desire of a relatively small number of terrible people whose ambitions are to impose their will on everyone else.

|
As from the beginning, Virginia.
There are no other contenders. |
|
My vote goes to Oklahoma, because it's north of Texas and south of Kansas.

The whole country is going to shit, but it seems with the exception of Michigan and the east coast that the colder the state is the slower it is turning to shit.

Quoted: From the sounds of it, Alaska. I love Alaska but I disagree that it's the greatest state. It's the greatest state for me, I can say that. I don't know what the greatest state is. It was California, California's totally FUBAR now. |

After debating and researching endlessly on where to move, I'm still undecided. All have bad points. Texas is leading the pack though. |
|
If we had a beach AZ would take the cake without a doubt. I still think AZ is the best state though with or without a coast especially with our new gun laws. Im glad that most people think the whole state is a big desert with nothing but rattle snakes and scorpions.

Puerto Rico! You sir are both a visionary and a stealer of thunder. |

I wouldn't even consider Texas in the running for this. No offense, Texans, but it isn't that great down there.
South Dakota Wyoming Montana These three I would consider among the greatest, as far as location to live, and freedom |
|
It's Louisiana.
Trust me. Don't feel like you have to come here, though. We have enough foreigners, especially Texicans, already. LC |

Texas. Next question? Dallas, houston, san antonio...do i need to go on? I would agree texas is up there on thw list but the libby progressive stench still lingers |

Best in what?
I'm from Texas and enjoy our history, hospitality, economy, and for the most part the political climate. California probably has the best weather. I like the heat so Arizona would be nice as well. I'd say that Texas still has one of the strongest economies of all the states, and it's strongly based on production compared to some other states. Overall my votes would be Texas, Arizona, Florida, and Colorado. Maybe even Oklahoma. ETA - Let me beat those to the punch who would suggest Texas has a weak economy because people make less money here - everything here is much cheaper than a lot of areas. New homes starting in the 120's, etc. Sure, you can make twice as much in D.C. while you live in a condo that costs half a million. |

I don't know about the best, but I love living in TN. Born here and hope to never leave.

Illinois gave the country Obama. We are automatically disqualified from the running of best state.

Quoted: Probably Colorado. Texas sucks. I came here to post this exact post. Word for word. |

California seems like it USED to take the cake...
Not sure now. |

Virginia - moderate climate with all four seasons , beaches, mountains, not too far from DC Philly and NY metro areas if that is your thing, mostly very rural areas south of Occupied Norva , good economy, good gun laws, very good colleges , military installations, and we have produced more presidents / founding fathers than any other state

We are only one lime pit and firing squad away from being a free state again.

Pisses my brother (Clarksburg) off to no end. |

Quoted: Probably Colorado. Nope. Not for the last 10 years. Too many Californians have moved there and have screwed it up just like they did California. I lived in CO from 91-00, and things were just starting to go to shit when we left. I'd say Wyoming or Montana |

California still wins as far as beauty and things to do and see.
But... The laws suck. |
