After listening to a bad bearing on the left drivers side wheel for a day I took it into a local shop and scheduled an appointment.

/the work took about an hour and when completed,  no more than 50 feet from the parking lot, the front fell off.

I just watched as the wheel traveled undisturbed down the road 100+ yards before landing in an old mans yard.

What a way to spend your Friday.

Na, it was the 4wd bearing on a 2wd truck trick. Or so he said.

Sheared the caliper and brake line.

At the first "thump" i felt I began to brake and pull over. That's when the second "thump" happened and I saw the wheel go by.

Same thing happened to my Explorer last year. The bearing gave out and the rotor and all came right off. I was going down the highway at around 45 when it happened.

No lugnuts installed? Common error.
Only took an hour...but not completed.
Better pic would help.
Humans make errors even when you pay them not to.
DIY.
For future reference recheck all work done by your local shop.
Get what you paid for?
Its everywhere.

That's most likely the truth. A co-worker of mine had a similar occurrence after he replaced a hub assembly on a customer's 2WD Chevy truck.

Thankfully, though, it happened to him, not the customer, because he attempted to road test the vehicle after the repair.

You should consider not going back to that shop. The tech that worked on your vehicle made NO attempt to check his work, and it could very well have ended VERY badly for you.

That'll do it.  And your pic backs it up.
Mechanic should have noticed it was the wrong bearing though.

That's nothing.  One of our patrol cars recently had a tranny flush and they refilled it with motor oil.  Made it about 20k miles before it caused $6k in damage.

Sometimes things happen.  How the shop handles the repair will tell you a lot about them.  They should make you whole including any body work, a complete brake job, any other repairs that are a consequence of the accident, and a rental car.  If they do this then they are a good shop.  Don't try to milk them for "extras".

I had that happen on Kandahar Airbase. Put weight on the opposite rear corner, and continued to pimp on.
