So a contractor buddy of mine told me that the new building he is working on doesn't have a 13th floor. He was told by the Superintendent that this is normal because of superstition. I was like , but after reading the Wikipedia page it made me go .

Why in this modern era do people still believe in this nonsense?

I think it's more of a tradition than a superstition now-a-days. Surprised this is news to you though, I don't think I have ever seen a 13th floor. Seems your building is also missing a 14th floor.. 13th must have eaten it.

4 is the equivalent of 13 in Asian cultures.  "Four" is pronounced almost exactly like "death" in Mandarin, just a different intonation.

The 13th floor is the portal to hell ,if the elevator stops on 13 don't get out !!!

You think that is bad, one time I was setting up a new telephone switch and I assigned extension 666 to a employee who was a Baylor graduate, he pitched a real hissy fit over it.

As for the 13th floor, I have been in several buildings that have one.

What keeps the 14th floor from falling onto the 12th floor?

There is a 13th floor.  In that building it is the 16th floor.

So, do you think that the number itself holds the power or the actual location? as said above, the thirteenth floor is #16

Alot of building dont have a 13th floor. Many bldgs in NYC put mechanical Equipment rooms there - HVAC and the like.
Seems like it is an older trend as many newer one do indeed have a 13.

I know of at least one building in NY where the 13th floor isn't just relabeled 14, it's maintenance and building management.  The public elevators skip it, service elevators do not.

We have 38 18 wheelers at work, but we don't have a number 13.

Just for that reason.

Oddly enough I work on the 13th floor of my building.

The odd part is, there is no 12th floor.

If I were rich and commissioning a building of my own, I would definitely put in a 13th floor to spite all the pussy-boys.

At least you don't have a 7 1/2 floor like in "Being John Malkovich"

So that floor above the 12th floor is not 13 from the bottom?

Mechanical floors not open to public. I have been in the "missing floors" of many high rises for work. It's where things like electrical rooms and HVAC equip are.

The image in the URL contains "Shanghai," if that building is actually in Shanghai, then the reason for no 4th or 14th floor is definitely due to the Asian superstition I mentioned before.  Again, 4=13 in Asia, particularly in China.

If I were rich, I would construct a very tall building, and every floor would be 13.

Also, the buttons would not be in order.  If you push the 2nd 13 button, it may take you to the top floor.. etc.

But the floors are there. They just opt to make them mechanical floors not open to the public.

Remember a link someone sent me several years ago about some college bungee jumpers that tied off to a building, and the jumper hit the ground, because the building didn't have a numbered 13th floor, so their height calculations were about 10-12 feet off.  Or on, as the case may be.

When I was doing CATV construction surveys in Chicago hi rises, one of the questions was "Does the building have a 13th floor". It ran around 50/50 whether there was or not.

99% of the buildings I work in in NYC do not have a 13 floor.  The newest building I have worked in was complete about 5 years ago, no 13 floor.

I used to work in this building:

http://www.cityoftulsa.org/our-city/one-technology-center.aspx

This building has a 13th floor just like all the other floors.  It has also had a horrible track record.  First they couldn't fill the data center because the floor buckled.  Then they couldn't fill the reflecting pond because the floor buckled.  Then the company that owned it went bankrupt.  A few years later half the windows on one side blew out and fell to the street below.  Never mind the gas main and water main breaks.  Worst of all the City of Tulsa took it over....

13th floors are bad juju.
