Depending on what happens in the subcommittee, the bill may go back to the Judiciary and then to the House floor for a vote.

Why do we have ourselves to blame?  Do you honestly think we have that much control over Congress?  You still live in matrix-like reality that they want you to see--the one where American democracy still functions and politicians actually read the letters from their constituents.  If the bill gets killed, it will be because some personal friend of a friend in GOA or the NRA had lunch with a Congressman or one of his aides and explain to him that corporate CEO X likes skeet shooting and the mail order ammo ban is going to piss him off and he will be less likely to contribute money to the Congressman.

Get it?

It will pass. The GOP, in order to look like they are tough on terrorism (i.e. to get VOTES) will give excuses like it is a small price to pay for security and legitimate sportsmen have no reason to object to the law.

I want to explain what I mean when I say, "If it passes, we only have ourselves to blame," or put another way... We get the government that we deserve.

Pre 9/11 estimates were that some 80 million Americans own firearms. Add another million or two who were motivated to become gun owners by the terrorist attacks, and we are talking about roughly a third of the population who should be concerned about anti gun legislation.

Yet the NRA currently has about four and a half million members, which works out to [b]only about 5% of ALL gun owners.[/b]

Now I'm not one of those people who think that the sun rises and sets with the NRA. Far from it.

I am merely using their membership numbers to illustrate that if we were ever able to truly mobilize and utilize our vast, and untapped political strength, we would begin to see the changes that we all wish for... the repeal of unconstitutional gun laws!

Instead, it has been my experience that we are seemingly Balkanized and apathetic beyond hope; and that [b]WE[/b] are ultimately to blame for all of the illegal laws that are passed.

You know the old story... Hunters only care that their deer rifles are not targeted. Trap and skeet shooters only care about their shotguns. Target shooters aren't concerned about gun control. After all, who could see their expensive single shot paper punchers as a threat to public safety? You get the picture.

Even on these forums, which are dedicated to the ownership and use of the most demonized of firearms… [b]the evil assault weapon[/b], it is an up hill battle to get some members motivated.  
People will post endlessly on the virtues of one weapons system over another, and discussions will go on for days over the most trivial of crap, but ask many of these same people to write or call their elected officials, and the feedback is disappointing, to say the least.

Politicians like Waxman, Schumer, and Fienstine may be socialists, be they are still politicians who need to win re-election, and answer to the demands of their constituencies.

Their anti-gun agendas would shrivel up and blow away if even half of all American gun owners would speak in a unified, uncompromising way, and [b]DEMAND[/b] that these politicians take their oaths to the Constitution seriously.

Unfortunately, my Congressperson at the moment is Cynthia (the Bushes allowed 9/11 so they could make money) McKinney, the Congress's resident nut case, so I tried to contact Rep. Bob Barr's web site, since he's on the committe and a proven champion of our rights.  Apparently, his web site is set up to only accept e mail from zip codes in his district. Will get w/the post office and see if I can figure out a zip that the site will accept.

Anyone else have a problem contacting congressmen from districts other than where they lived?

I called the NRA-ILA grass roots hotline, as I saw no reference to it on their web site.  The guy I talked to was unaware of the bill, and after he read it said that it had little chance of surviving.  

Y'all might want to call and let the NRA you are worried about this, as they don't seem to be.

I have recieved a call from the VA NFIB state director and he said the he would examine the bill and see if NFIB could have some influence at state level. I also recieved this email from NFIB's national headquarters:

I sent mine about 3-4 weeks ago, and still no answers.

I received another call from the state NFIB director, Gordon Dixon, and he told me he had been in contact with NFIB's congressional lobbyists and as far as they can tell the bill[red] [b]will not pass[/b][/red]! It is being highly protested and is receiving little support.
