You discover your wonderful one-year-old child is, because of a mixup at the hospital, not yours.  Would you want to exchange the child to try to correct the mistake?

It would be real tough but I think I would exchange and make things right forever.

A one year old, yes. A 10 year old, probably not.

I dunno, blood is thicker than water.  I'd want my kid.

Why do you ask this question, my son?

You're probably right. It would be pretty strange if you kept the wrong one even if it was old enough to understand what was happening.

I would say trade.

Make it right.  At one year, while the kid has bonded to you, it's not anything like what will come in years to come.  At this point, everyone can get through it and be  better in the end.

This is tougher on the parents than the kids at this point.

In this scenario, is the other baby positively ID'd as yours?

What if DNA showed neither one to be your own?

Yes, of course...

One year old, yeah, but I'd want to keep in touch with the real parents and try to become friends with them, so that we both can enjoy seeing our real children and the children we got to know for a year grow up.

Oh yeah, and SUE THE HOSPITAL!   :-)

My parents don't believe in having kids at hospitals - they don't see the point.  I'm proud to say that me and my six siblings were born at home.

This actually happened in South Korea about ten years ago.  The one family was rich and the other dirt poor.

The kids were about 10 years old when it happened, I do not know the details, but imagine the implications.

At one year old a child is not yet sentient. I would say get your child back, regardless.

Oh really?  Not yet sentient?

As a father of a 15 month old child, I second that.

A one year old child knows exactly who its parents are.  It knows exactly which teacher at daycare is its favorite.  It would be hugely traumatized by a 'switch', IMHO.

In trying to come up with a 'what would I do in this situation' answer, I think I traumatized myself![;D]  I couldn't possibly imagine the pain involved in giving up my son if someone told me there was a mixup.  I don't see how any parent could feel differently.

OK, OK, I'll quit.  I say make the switch.  You and the kids will be glad you did, and you'll be wondering years later if you don't.
