This is Florida ( black line is current coastline)if the East Antarctic Ice Sheet were to melt.
Wouldent have to swim quite as far if the West Sheet melted

Forget Global warming.  You need to worry about Super Volcanoes and the next ice age.  Ever since Mt Pinatubo errupted, average world temp has gone down by .5 degrees centegrade, and that was a small one.

Won't Global warming lead to more water evaporation?  Which would lead to more clouds?  Which means it would rain more?

What am I missing??

That's with the icecubes IN the water.  When you are talking about the Icecaps and Global warming, you have to worry about the ice ontop of the water.

In either case I still believe there's more to worry about a Volcano errupting or a meteor hitting sending enough debris into the air to plunge us into the next ice age.

THANK YOU for pointing that out.   Ice will displace the same amount of water frozen as it will melted.  I guess some people are too busy creating nifty looking diagrams of doom and gloom to learn some actual physics.

Volumetrically, the given moles of water at room temp will actually consume less space than the same number of moles frozen. Water is a di-polar molecule. As the water cools, and the valance electrons slow, the molecules begin to align poles. This takes up more space and the freezing water expands.

That is why you put antifreeze in your radiator.

30 years ago I was taught in school that another Ice Age was long over due - that was the ecocrisis of the day.

But somewhere along the way, the GreenPary Eco-freaks at the Sierra Club realized they can't scare the sheeple into rejecting capitalism with the Ice Age boogie man because that wasn't "man-made".

So they invented "global warming".

So now they take 30, 50, 100 year climate "data"  and create a VERY slight upward trend that is supposedly because of Western Civilization.

These climate snapshots are flawed in many respects:
1) they are of such a relatively short timescale (100yrs vs 100,000yr planetary climate cycles) - it's like projecting what the temperature will be at the end of the day (within 0.5 degrees) based on the first 5 minutes after you wake up in the morning.

2) The "data" are not controlled. They are taken using vastly different equipment, methods and locations across many decades. There is no control data recorded by all these methods that shows they are consistent in reading ANY data. There's no constant that can be used to standardize these vastly differing recording methods. Very unscientific.

3) The computer projections are immensely "fudged". There are so many variables that are unsupportingly ASSUMED as a given that the outcomes of these "projections" are essentially predetermined by those who create the algorithms.

These computer programs DO NOT even accurately arrive at CURRENT climate conditions if fed data from previous decades. There's NO indication that they should be relied upon to accurately predict FUTURE climate conditions.

IF there is a momentary (50yrs) fluctuation in planetary temperature, it is no way indicative of what the fluctuations will be in the next 50 years.

Bottom-line:
The GreenParty/SierraClub/AntiCapitalist/EcoFreaks are nothing more than chicken little scaring the town elders into believing that the sky is falling by CREATING "scientific" data to support their Socialist/AntiAmerican agenda of deconstructing Western Civilization.

You can honestly believe that if the tempature of the earth did rise enouh to start melting the polar ice caps that flooding would occur and most of the now costal areas would not disapear under the sea?  Also that you use as a model of a glass of water and some ice cubes?  I'll give you the fact that water in a frozen state will take up more space than in liquid form, but what of the ice that isn't floating?  What a bout all the ice and snow that are on land? The ice age was the reason why the bearing strait was exposed allowing creatures to migrate from Europe to the Americas.

The volume of a given ice cube and the volume of water the given ice cube displaces in water is the same thing.

My point was that the total volume of ice cubes in a arbitrary volume of water will be less after the ice cubes melt.

But, if the volume is increased, isn't the density decreased, thus it will float higher & end up displacing the same amount of water?

Didn't you guys ever watch Mr. Wizard.  If you have a glass of ice and fill it to the rim with water, and the ice melts, the water level will stay the SAME!!!!!!  Try it your damn self!

This, however has nothing to do with global warming, because some of the ice is currently on land!

I would imagine that IF it were possible to do this.  You may be able to raise the water level a few feet.  Someone please give me data on how many cubic feet of water exists in landsurface ice and I will calculate it for you.

BTW - The highest point in Florida is only about 36 feet ASL if I remember correctly.

BTW...when you get a mile of ice piled up on the earth's crust for a millenia, the crust actually sinks to compensate for this weight.  The earth's crust that makes up much of Canada is still rebounding from the immense amount of weight that it once supported.  In other words, much of Canada is rising...slowly, but surely.

Man, that's heavy!

There was probably hundreds of times more ice volume on land during a major ice age then there is on the surface now.

Think "surface area to volume relationship".

i wouldn't try to, i'd take my pants off, tie knots in the bottoms of the legs, capture air in them by placing them belt first in the water and laying between the legs, repeat when the air squeezes out, i've done it before, and depending on how your pants hold trapped air when wet, you could do this A LOT longer than you could swim or tread water.
(edited to add, cool huh?)

98-99% of everything that has ever lived eventually fell to extinction at some point, so it's not a question of if, just when. If melting ice sheets don't drown us, meteors &/or super volcanos don't smother or obliterate us, or famine/disease/pestilence doesn't kill us off, we'll probably just cause it to occur all by ourselves (Or, at least, those among us whom have the power to make it so).

Morbid sarcasm, yes. But, doesn't the book state that mankind will eventually destroy itself if left unchecked?

You lost me there.
Im talking in reference to state changes. The ice has to melt to cause change in volume. The density increases. After the ice melts, the water is water.
I dont see how the ice floating or sinking factors into the situation. Unless, when the ice floats some volume of ice sticks up over the surface of the water.

"What happens when the ice melts? The water level drops a little."

If the ice is on land (antarctica, snow/glaciers on mountains, etc.) the ice melts and flows into the sea, raising it's level.

Yes that is what I was referring to, if the ice expands a bit (which makes it float) a bit will be above the water line changing the amount of water it displaces.

Global warming is total BS made up by Al Gore and a bunch of scientists making a killing from grants to research same.  I forget the exact figures, but something like 7,000 scientists say it exists and 70,000 say it is BS.  Of course, as mentioned, all those that say it exists are getting grant money.

Ummm, no. You are both mistaken. Antartica is a large LAND mass covered with ice. The part that is already in the water displaces water and so in melting would actuallu cause no rise in tide lines. Ice cubes melting in a glass of water don't make it overflow. However, if you take a full glass or bowl of water anmd dump a plate of ice cubes in to the full container, think glaciers melting and running off into the ocean, then of course it will overflow. That should be pretty logical, right?
