Who's the goofy looking guy holding the rat?[;)]

I was debating whether to post this, but now I have to.  A week ago last night I was coming home from Missouri and saw a good-sized snapping turtle crossing the road (U.S. Route 36), which is not conducive to long living.  Kind of like playing Russian Roulette with five loaded chambers.  I dodged him (it turned out to be a male), then slid half sideways turning around to get him before the next two got him.  I streaked across the road, moving pretty good for a pudgy old guy, grabbing his tail on the fly.  The vehicle behind me was a good Missouri Bubba who dodged me and waved while laughing hysterically.  The soccer mom behind him failed to see the humor.  The 18-wheeler coming from the other direction saw little by way of humor too.  Anyway, the turtle was saved.  I did not have the much-needed "turtle bag" that I keep in both trucks as I was in my wife's old car.  He tore the crap out of the passenger side floor, but that's another story.  I have eaten many turtles, but have gone soft on killing things that have to be nearly my age to be a "keeper."  I kept him in a garbage can all week, then left Saturday to take him back to Missouri and release him in my pond.  

Okay, now the real story.  As I'm driving in the hills of Missouri, a notice a very large bullfrog in the road.  It had rained about 5", so they are on the move.  I missed him, turned around, and went back.  As I come to a stop, he takes off for the ditch.  I shut the truck off so it wouldn't roll (it's a manual tranny), bail out and take off after him.  He makes it into the grass, gets away, and leaves me standing there like an idiot.  The real idiocy starts when I turn around to find my truck rolling backward down the hill.  You see, I shut it off, but I had left it in neutral.  Not smart.  You thought I ran fast after the turtle.  You should see how fast you can run after a truck leaving without you.  Not fast enough, in this case.  It swerved off into the ditch, hit the embankment, then pitched up, teetering, but didn't tip over.  Finally it settled with one wheel about a foot off the ground.  I had to lock the wheel hubs and use four wheel drive to get out, but I made it.  Without the frog, I might add.  

From now on, when I see animals in distress, I will run their sorry asses over.  [}:D]

Not really.  I will leave the truck in gear though.  [:D]

I hate to see them killed on the road.  Just pick them up by the tail.  They can do you no harm that way.  If you grab close to the body they can kick you and scratch with their nails a little, but no harm.  Thanks for the help.  Set your parking brake!!

Well anti, you tried and that counts for a lot. Kinda strange how it can make you cry after only spending a couple hours with a critter, huh? [:(]

Us "humane-iacs" are always a soft touch.... But, yet, I find that "kitten leaping towards a landmine" gif to be hilarious too...go figure.

Sorry to hear it, Anti.  Oh well, it was a noble gesture.  I was looking forward to future updates.  [:)]
