Heard that from a lady in a class I'm currently taking. Apparently, she's married to one of these Marine/SF hybrid super warriors.

The term was first used in Vietnam. Brown water = not the ocean.

"Well...I don't mean to brag, but I'm a combination of US Marine and Special Forces Operator." "Ooohhh....wait till I tell all the girls! Come here, you big super warrior" |

Boat Company with a MEU or on FAST and pumpin himself up as super warrior.

The wife is proud of her husband and you sound ... |

Could be some validity to it.
Brown Water Navy aka Tokin Gulf Yacht Club. http://brownwater-navy.com/ Could also be part of this outfit. My cousin is in this group and served in Cam Rahn Bay. http://iuwg1vets.org/ |

You just heard about these guys? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Warfare_Combatant-craft_Crewmen I've read here and elsewhere that their training is a bit difficult. |

My father was in the "Brownwater Navy" in Vietnam. I don't know what the modern version was, but back then it was the the riverboats. Google search "Mobile Riverines" and you'll get the idea. For what it's worth, my Dad is pretty badass but he is not special forces or the like. His unit did a lot of insertions and extractions of SEAL teams, maybe that is the confusion.

While traditionally a distinction was made between the coastal brown-water navy (operating in the littoral zone to 200 nautical miles (370 km)) and a seagoing blue-water navy, a new term "green-water navy" has been created by the U.S. Navy
from this wiki article. eta So I'm guessing she's referring to his job as being one of those who fight in the littoral zone. |

Quoted: Swcc Are swabbies not Marines. But they work with everyone "Due in part to SWCC's extremely difficult training and operating environment, they are qualified to operate jointly with other armed forces (particularly those within USSOCOM such as SEALs, Special Forces, MARSOC and AFSOC) operate in inclement weather and sea state, evade and fight on land as a contingency, and perform maritime special operations missions such as direct action, recon, ship boarding or Vessel Boarding Search and Seizure (VBSS), and sea-to-land support using a broad array of vessels and armaments." |

Swcc Are swabbies not Marines. Yeah but my grandmother was convinced I was was in the Army. "So are ya still likin it in the Army dear?" Sometimes Civilians just don't get the difference. |

I think they were stood up around the same time the Marine units were stood down. |

Telephone game.
Marine Expeditionary Unit Special Operations Capable. Can't fault the lady for hearing what she wants to hear, or not understanding that SOC is NOT the same as SO. |

It could be worse, he could be Black Water Navy.
(plumbing, not merc.) |

There are brown water, green water and blue water navies.
He might be a SWCC. He might be a Riverine. |

The river boat operation were also known as Fag Bait. They would patrol up and down the river to draw fire and the attack helicopters would come in for the kill. It was a swell job, "son we need you to go up this way and when someone starts shooting at you we will know where to attack them. Good Luck"

If I remember correctly there is a swcc chief on this forum, those guys are no joke. That said wives tend to not understand everything about a job so they fill in the details themselves, I would just let it go. Like the earlier posts said she is proud of her husband let it be. My wife kept calling me a nuclear engineer I guess because she knows I am a nuke and she has heard me talk about engineering spaces... I corrected her but she still doesn't really get it... To me there is a difference between a reactor operator and a nuclear engineer, to her not so much. I would hardly consider it because I was talking myself up to her, I try to explain my job as accurately as I can to her and she takes what she understands. That is probably the case here. -Mike |
