CNN.com - DA: Boy saves sister, pays with his life - May 12, 2002

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- An 8-year-old boy stabbed to death by
an intruder who also killed his mother saved his sister's life by
distracting the attacker, authorities said Saturday.
Andy Zheng died trying to save his 12-year-old sister and their mother
from a man who came to their apartment Thursday night, apparently to
collect a debt from their father, who wasn't there, said Montgomery County
District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr.
Castor said Saturday that as the attacker stabbed his mother and sister,
the boy grabbed his arm, and that his sister would "be dead if he hadn't
done that."
The mother, Yu Qin Zheng, 35, was killed in the attack, but 12-year-old
Mindy Zheng was able to break away and call police.
Police arrested Chang Qi, 46. He was arraigned on murder, attempted
murder, burglary and other charges.
Police interviewed Mindy Zheng in the hospital, who said her brother tried
to pull away Qi, who was wearing a Halloween mask and armed with a knife
and a stun gun. Eventually, Castor said, Qi shifted his focus and started
stabbing the boy, giving the girl time to call 911.
Qi jumped out a second-story window and shattered his leg after police
broke down the door. He and the daughter were hospitalized in fair
condition.
Police believe Qi once worked for Zheng, but they did not know details
about the debt.
"I don't know, I got so mad. I wanted to kill everybody," police quoted
Chang Qi as saying. It was unclear Saturday if he had retained an
attorney.

WPVI.com: Mother and Son Stabbed to Death in Glenside Apartment
Mother and Son Stabbed to Death in Glenside Apartment

GLENSIDE, PA: May 10, 2002 —

Action News David Henry reports on the investigation.
A man who said he was owed $1,700 by a restaurant owner went to the
businessman's home to collect and stabbed three people, killing the
businessman's wife and 8-year-old son and injuring his 12-year-old
daughter, police said.
Interviewed at the hospital where he was taken after the attack, police
said Chang Qi, 46, admitted going to the apartment Thursday night armed
with a knife and a taser to collect the money. He said he stabbed the
mother only after she hit him, police said.
"I don't know, I got so mad. I wanted to kill everybody," police quoted Qi
as saying.
Yu Qin Zheng, 35, died at the hospital. Andy Zheng, 8, was pronounced dead
at the scene. The father, De Xiong Zheng, 47, was not home at the time of
the attack, police said.
Mindy Zheng, 12, told police that her mother, her brother and she arrived
home after working at the family's restaurant about 10 p.m. Thursday
night. While Yu Qin Zheng was taking a shower, a man wearing a white mask
and carrying a knife and a taser surprised her in the kitchen, attacked
her and then went after her brother and mother, Mindy told police. The
girl managed to call 911 soon after, police said.
Police officers responding to a 911 call shortly after 10:30 p.m. broke
down the door to the apartment after a man inside said he was taking a
shower and refused to let them in, authorities said.
Qi then jumped out a second-story window and shattered his leg, police
said.
Qi, whose driver's license showed a Brooklyn, N.Y., address, was charged
Friday with murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and related
charges. He was expected to be arraigned at his hospital bed sometime
Friday, police said.
Mindy was taken to Abington Hospital for treatment. Her condition was not
immediately released, but authorities said she was expected to survive.
"She did a remarkable job," said Abington Police Chief William Kelly.
The attack happened in the Mt. Vernon Garden Apartments in Abington
Township, just north of Philadelphia.

The attitude of the police out there is soo upsetting.

These people are "heros" because they let themsleves be butchered while waiting for the police.

Most upsetting...

Reminds me all too much of the "Pitchfork Murders" back in California a couple years ago.
