i could have built an ar using a del ton kit for 550...id probably take that, a cz 82 and a maverick 88.

I would skip the shotgun. Shotguns are a fowling piece and a specialized CQB weapon. They are prolific because they are reliable and cheap.
A used Glock for use as CCW and a primary handgun. The "compact models" fit the bill. A G19 9mm or a G23 i.40 S&W would be ideal. Can be had for around $350. The rest I would sink into an AR15. The hunting rifle could come later. I would look long and hard at C&R rifles like Lee-Enfields and K98s. |

And as you note, they are reliable and cheap. I the idea of C&R rifles such as Lee Enfields and K98s. But the Husqvarna 640 is a model 98 rifle and it is affordable and well suited to be used as an all round hunting rifle. Mine will shoot MOA or better. The SKS is cheap and reliable. And ammo can still be found cheaply. Anyway, this is a fun topic and keep the ideas coming. |

With a little luck you could have a nice rifle at an attractive price. And I do have a High Standard Model 20. It is well-used, but the bore is bright and shiny and it is a very smooth, useful shotgun. And I only paid $125 for it. Anyway, lets keep the ideas coming. I also like the idea of the Mosin Nagant M44 carbine. Those are often available at low cost and ammo is cheap too. |

For $1,000, starting from scratch, I would probably pick up a Glock 19 and a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870.
Yeah, I know you said pistol and rifle, but really, for $1,000 you would be making too many concessions, and a shotgun is a great choice for defensive use. I would rather have my AR though. |

Let me elaborate a little You need firearms for the following purposes: 1. Hunting big game––elk, moose, bear, etc. 2. Self defence 3. Small game, birds Some of the weapons you choose may be compromises. I agree that an AR-15 would be a superb piece for self defence. But it is probably not an ideal big game weapon. This is all about compromises, so lets hear your ideas. |

Glock 17, $350 if you're good Ruger 10/22 $175 Buy some ammo, extra mags and save for the AR for 650-750 later. The shotgun will be able to kill anything, pistol allows low profile backup, .22 can prob kill anything...just more quietly. |

Finally,that leaves us with a hunting rifle. I would pick a Husqvarna Model 640 in 8mm Mauser or .30-06. You can usually find one for about $350. There's one over at Guns America for $350 and it includes a 4 power scope. So there you have it––the 1000 dollar home arsenal. Please share your ideas. There are lots of folks who need to arm themselves on a budget. You officially have $1000 worth of clubs to beat someone with because you don't have any money for ammo. If all i had to spend was $1000 to defend my house/food/etc i would buy an AR15 and as much ammo as i could afford. It will defend you, it will feed you, and will run pretty much forever. |

I'm pretty sure a 12 gauge slug can take down large N. American game. Go with some badass sabot slugs if you need more accuracy.
I'd limit myself to a good reliable shotgun, and a pistol...spending $600 total on both combined. Then, I'd drop at least $200 on ammo. That should leave $200 for your next gun...save up and get a nice rifle then...either an AR or something else semi-auto. The bolt action can wait...to do it justice, you'll want a good scope...which will eat up your budget fast. |

Stag kit on an inexpensive lower and a police-trade in pistol such as a Gen2 Glock, Beretta, or 3rd Gen S&W.
Put a sling on the rifle, get an Uncle Mike's kydex holster for the pistol, and if you have an $$ left over, a Primary Arms red dot. |

Here's how I'd do it.
Pistol: Used S&W 5906 - $300 Rifle: AMD65 - $350 Shotgun: Remington 870 - $300 I see no reason why the AMD can't be used for hunting, it's perfectly capable of bringing down deer sized game out to 150 yards, but if not then go over budget by a few bucks and add a Mosin to the list. |
