With the 4th reactor on fire, and 3 exploding, is there enough concern for folks in the U.S. to buy potassium Iodide??

If the reactors melt down in the future, does that warrant buying some "just in case"??

Today on Rush's show he said KI pills are pretty much NA right now, citing several Mfgrs and warehouses who have sold their entire inventories yesterday.

No, because a complete core meltdown still won't release radiation....

"The containment structure is a hermetically (air tight) sealed, very thick structure made of steel and concrete. "As a doctor, I find the surgeon general's comments utterly irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

Potassium iodide (KI) is not a general purpose treatment for radiation exposure. No one should take potassium iodide without being instructed to do so. Allergic reactions are possible.

Further, there are a limited number of KI tablets available and those tablets should be provided only to those who are most likely to be exposed to highly elevated levels of radiation. Otherwise many who might benefit will not have access to KI while many who are nowhere near being exposed have the tablets.

I'm astounded that surgeon general, especially a Naval doctor, would be so unthinkingly irresponsible as to indicate that everyone in CA should get the tablets. She should be relieved of duty and a replacement found that is responsible, knowledgeable and understands the gravity of the situation.

Of the six reactors at the Nuclear facility....only 2 were operational, the other 4 were in a refueling outage....there was no nuclear fuel rod assemblies there. God Damn, I am getting sick of the false truths and assumptions going on here and in the media.

Think about it this way - the Chernobyl event was FAR WORSE than even the worst case projections for Japan, and people as far away from Chernobyl as the U.S. is from Japan certainly didn't have ANY need for iodide supplements.

No, you don't need any. What you really need to do........is pour about a twenty foot thick slab of reinforced concrete. That meltdown is going to burn all the way through the earth and come out the other side. Probably right into your garage.........

FWIW I just got back from the local vitamin store, all the KI was long gone and waaaayyy backordered. So I got a 200-count bottle of Kelp capsules 125 mg, which is 150% RDA of dietary iodine each, 09/2013 exp. Price was about 6 bucks. They were moving quick, but still had several on the shelf.

ETA - Not necessarily an over-reaction for me in this case. We live 8 mi from a nuclear power plant, so iodine is something I should have had in stock already (they mailed us a nuclear safety brochure stating that) and this was just the motivator to make me go and get it.

For the current Japan nuclear issue, individuals in the US will be fine.
Levels to warrant iodine prophylaxis won't reach the US; risk of consumption of KI likely outweighs the risk of ¹³¹I exposure.

We keep a bottle of KI in stock, because I don't believe the authorities would ever come close to telling the truth in the event of a serious release of radioactive material. It's the bureaucratic mentality: "Should we tell the folks downwind about this release?" "What, and cause mass hysteria? Somebody might get hurt!"

2 days after this started in Japan, the "authorities" were just starting to talk about stockpiling KI just in case. Little late for that? For something that's cheap, safe and effective there's no reason not to have a bottle even if the likelihood of an event is extremely small.
