Around here we've got so many CJ grads coming out of WOU and competing for those
slots that come open here I very much doubt there's too many GED types with a badge. |

When I was a cop, all you needed was a GED.
And, I'm sure that a lot of the crazy, spastic, off-kilter motherfuckers that I worked with had a hard time getting over that bar.

Detroit PD comes to mind. Given the suckness that is working in detroit they dont get many college grads looking to risk thier lives for 12 an hour. I applied twice and was turned down, the first time was right before the law off in 2005 and again in 2009 the second time they basically told me it was because I am white.

And I've known more college-educated idiots than I can count. Education <> intelligence. |

I know dozens of cops with GEDs and we still actively hire them IF they are someone we want. That said, promotions are somewhat limited to GED holders. I'm not sure why this is so controversial.

When I got hired baclk in the dark ages the minimum requirment was a GED. The unofficial requirement was a bachelors degree or 4-years of active duty military. My academy class started with 30 from each of those two groups. It finished with 29 former military and 7 college grads. |

The only Police Officers I know that don't have four year college degrees have a significant amount of military service/experience.

Seriously runcible, it's been that way "forever" around here. They (WOU/WOSC) use our Armory to train in. We see 70-80 of them (CJ Majors) rotate through here every couple of months. That PROBABLY says something about Oregon's economy since the late 90's (When I came back in) but I'd really have to wonder what some kid with a GED would have to do to get picked-up by one of the LE Agencies around here. |

I am actually working writing up the results on some research right now that shows little to no effect for bachelors degrees in patrol officers across the measures. This is a medium size department in an urban area.
There is some evidence that links education to use of force interestingly, but we really need more data on the issue as a whole. |

Our PD only requires a GED but even in good times the overwhelming majority have a degree, military or both. The communication skills that are needed today almost require some type of education beyond a HS degree/GED. |

The DOJ has a quota in place, indicating not enough African Americans passed the exam so they want the passing score lowered. The Dayton NAACP does not think the testing standards should be lowered. Of course, this is tied directly to federal handouts to the police department or the city, as funding always is accompanied by mandates. My dept. has tons of older guys who got hired with just a GED or regular HS diploma. I'm one of them. You need college or military now, The test to get hired was so easy it was laughable.
I'd say better background checks are more important than college. They finished my background "check" over 2 years after I was hired and on patrol. |

I also know some with GED's and a lot of them are the most proactive Officers on the department. I would much rather work with a guy that has common sense, street smarts and a GED, than a guy with a 4 year degree that is only book smart. |
