I'm watching the news and I see the refugee centers full of cooperative people helping each other out and behaving in an orderly manner. I'm so confused.

Why aren't they rioting?

I wonder if they'll be sitting around in their donated tents a year from now getting cholera while they wait for someone else to clear the rubble from their streets like in Haiti?

Someone on here noted in a post months ago, that with the stated cubic yardage of rubble in Port Au Prince, and the stated number of people sitting in the tent cities, divided by 4 to reflect the number of able-bodied men, if they had each cleared away a very doable (I think it was 3) number of cubic yards of rubble per day, they would have had the city completely cleared for rebuilding in a matter of months.  Instead, they've all sat on their asses, eaten donated food, and drank from the same water they shit in, much the way they did before the earthquake.

Some cultures are doomed to failure.  At a certain point, it is sheer stupidity to defy the will of Mother Nature and Darwin.  Haiti could be a tropical paradise if it wasn't for the Haitians.

Japan will bounce back from this.

Nature + Nurture.
1. They value education.

2. They have a culture which expects decency and achievement.

3. They are probably genetically less predisposed to impulsive, reckless and violent behaviors.

4. They're more intelligent

5. They have greater self-control.
In general, they're more civilized humans than some other groups.

Discipline, respect and conformity are stressed in Japan. They have had a functional society for hundreds of years based on respect for authority. I spent some time in Okinawa so I have a little familiarity with the way things work there.

West Africa has been more of a hunter-gatherer society due in part to the climate, and is very superstitious and tribal, even within their otherwise ethnically homogeneous society, as mentioned above. The area has also always been prone to various deadly diseases, even in the modern age. This lowers the life expectancy considerably.

According to the World Bank:
Life expectancy in Ivory Coast: 57.4
Life expectancy in Japan: 82.6

From what I understand the Japanese are so disciplined and honest that you could leave your wallet full of cash on a bench in a busy train station and they will either leave it be or turn it in to lost and found 99.9% of the time. I even heard they will turn in a half eaten sandwich to lost and found. I am not surprised that a people with a very high moral character would handle themselves well in a crises.

Bloodthirsty when it came to non-Japanese.  I'm no expert on Japanese history, but from what I know, their society has been a very orderly and efficient one for a thousand years or better.  I don't recall much tolerance for disobedience or shiftless behavior at any point in their history as a nation.

Exactly.

The difference between a nation and a multicultural empire.

It also explains why good people in good towns brought in the scourge of the Earth after Katrina, only to find out they broght thieves, rapists and other assorted scum into their communities. Same with some of the ridiculous immigration debacles that have ensued over the past several decades. I've seen these people ruin plenty of nice midwestern towns with their naivete.

My sister lived in Japan for many years and told me much about their country.
Now, it was different for her daughter who was gang raped with no consequences by a bunch of nice japanese boys who thought it was a great deal to take a "half". That's what they call them over there, apparently. They also don't do anything about it. I guess a "half" isn't worthy....

Interesting world.

Begs the question... why did they lack trade routes? Why did THEY not advance beyond living in dirt like the other civilizations advanced beyond living in dirt?

Everyone was living in dirt at some point in their past. But some peoples invented things like the wheel and boats and the written word and metals. THOSE are what led to advancements which led to trade routes.

But not all civilizations got the idea for things like wheels and transportation and transgenerational communication. Why not?
