To be brief, I paid a shop $3,700 for work on my 89 Jeep truck (5 speed).  The big ticket was a brand new transmission.  The work was done 2yrs ago, but I have only put on 1,800 miles.  The transmission is now junk...the synchronizers are shot so I usually can't get it into 1st, grinds into 2nd, and falls out of 3rd.  Shop says, yep its the synchros.  They will not do anything about it.  Say its a 3 month or 3k mile warranty.  Offered to fix it for $1,985.  Yeah, its been over 3 months, but it only has 1,800 miles!!  I paid them $3,700 bucks and have squat to show for it.
Filed with the BBB and Chamber of Commerce.  Any other ideas?

What's your point? Perhaps you should have tried to find a shop that offered a longer warranty.  Would you still be bitching if it had been 19 years with only 180 miles?

Edited to add: I'd be pissed too but, that's why they have written warranties.

If that is the t-5 transmission I'm suprised it lasted that long.  It's a piece of junk.  I don't know what version 5spd they put in after the t-5 but if you are going to keep the jeep I would consider swapping trannys.  Bro in law put 3 t-5's in his 82 cj7.

Man, that sucks. Did you charge the repair on a credit card? You could try file a dispute  with your credit card company. Looks like you could  in the cold on this one though CC company.

Does Arkansas have a state of Bureau of Automotive Repair that regulates car repair shops? You may try to look them up to see if they can of some help. But don't be too surprised that they turn out to be toothless tiger.

The next step would probably take the shop to small claims court. You probably have to look into what the max limit in term of dollars the small claims court in Arkansas will handle. Ask the court clerk how to file the papers. I hope you get your problem resolved satisfactorily.

Good points.  Guess its that I grew up in a small town and if someone sold you something and it broke after little usage (considering the transmission should have gone for 80+ thousand miles) it really pisses me off that they didn't even offer a 10% discount!
Dukota:  If I keep it I'll go with the XJ15 (I think that's it).

Go to a hunting supply store and purchase a bottle of skunk scent. Probably best if you do it in another town than yours. Put the contents into a cheap squirt gun and dilute it enough to shoot. Late at night put the squirt gun up to the gap in the door of asshole inc; there is always a gap in the door, and unfreakinload. Go in the next day, comment on the smell and ask if they thought about fixing your truck. Repeat as needed.

Uhhh how about Alaska?

They probably put a trans from a junked Jeep in your car. They probably thought you'd get rid of the thing soon since it was so old.

Dear Mgniko. I'm sorry about your trouble. I am a mechanic, and my only suggestion is that you buy a used tranny. In about 1985 manual transmissions radically changed. To assemble one from new parts requires heating and cooling parts to change their dimensions so that they fit together. Some parts require freezing, others heating. All shops that I've ever seen do not have the equipment to assemble manual transmissions. Even dealers! It used to be in the days of torches and R12 refrigerant that you could heat or cool a gear to slide it on. Without that, and with aluminum cases transmissions you would cringe to see how hard things press together, and how much the transmission case stretches! Always buy either a factory assembled, or used transimission if its a manual. In a 1989 Jeep 5 speed you would have spent $300.00 to $500.00 in a used box.

I gave up on all shops about 10 years ago.  I got so fed up with what things cost, and having work done that did not fix the problem, and all the frustration.... that I learned to work on everything myself.

Everything from tranny swaps, to timing belts, water pumps, head gaskets, you name it.... screw those shops.  I am done with them.  A little time, inclination, a salvage yard, and a good haynes manual, and there is nothing you cant do.

First you have to understand that "brand new transmissions" are not available even to dealers.  Any garage that told you they could replace your tranny with a "new" one is lying.

The closes you can get to a "new" transmission is a "factory re-build" which is assembled from parts, new and/or used, that meet the original OEM specs.  They are usually warranted from the mfg. ie Ford, Chrysler, GM that contracts for them to be re-built.

If your garage gave you a receipt claiming that you got a new transmission you should be able to take them to the cleaners in court.  I was once cheated by a garage that put in "re-built" parts on a ticket that stated "new" and after I confronted them they supplied me with my new parts rather than getting sued and I put the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing in myself.  You cannot trust this garage they overcharged you big time and I certainly would make them correct the problem if they indeed sold you "rebuilt" parts as "new" ones.

If you can't get the car into a gear it is often the throw out bearing, clutch, or pressure plate that is worn and not the "synchronizers".  If you can find a honest garage that will diagnose the problem and confirm that a simple adjustment is not your problem, replacing them is a weekend job with a transmission jack and some elbow grease.

I think AK is Arkansaw and AL is Alaska.

My sycro's are starting to give me problems in my 92 Wrangler, hard to get into 2nd and 4th.  When I first brought it into Jeep, they didn't find anything wrong.  They told me that they just swap out the whole tranny when there's something wrong instead of taking it apart and fixing it.  I'm not sure how true this is.  Seems that a 1200 job would be cheaper that swaping out the whole thing but I gues as a time saver and to have a set time/fee for a job, it may be better their way.

Yea, that sucks.  But in all fairness they did abide by the warrenty.  Pretty much cased closed IMHO.  Hell, even AAMCO offers a 1 year warrenty IIRC.

What kind of Jeep?  If it is a Cherokee or a Comanche, they used the Peugeot BA10/5 gearbox in that year, and it's a piece of shit to begin with.  I have one that - by some miracle - has survived 213K miles to date.  I am looking for an NV3550 or 4500 to build up and bolt in its place sometime soon...

As far a "brand new" transmissions, they CAN be had.  They are also very expensive, as they come from places like Advance Adapters and Drivetrain.com.  A proper reman will use a measured good case and maybe shafts, and Magnaflux everything else, replacing as necessary.  This is also how I approach my own rebuilds - I am usually on better terms with a local Machine Shop than I am with a repair shop (most garages don't have Magnaflux gear, and some of the other nifty stuff I like to have access to...)

For the BA10/5, the NV3550 os nearly an effortless swap, and the 3550 can be found in most pull yards under CJ/TJ/YJ, and parts for rebuild and reconditioning are readily available.  The NV3550 is the same length as the BA10/5, and the shift tower is only "mislocated" by about 3/4."

If it is a Cherokee (XJ) or Comanche (MJ,) feel free to visit us at www.naxja.org and we can probably teach you how to rebuild the thing yourself.  Good thing is, most manual transmissions are quite simple...

Thanks for the help guys.  Yeah, I know I'm basically SOL with the warranty and such.  Just can't get over places willing to loose customers rather than help.  Anyway, FFZ it is a Peugeot [:)]  I will check the written record to see if they stated new or rebuild also.  I'll check the throw out bearing and pressure plate too just in case.  Clutch is new.

When you need to buy another vehicle, you should check the anti-gun Consumer Report Vehicle rating of the potential vehicle you intend to purchase at your local library, just don't give'em any money. I know, I know; but this is better than taking advice from say... the Michelin Man. I bet this problem with the trans probably shows up as black mark for a series of years. Sorry to see you lose out so much money, live little, learn a lot.
