With a pump, you have more versatility when it comes down to non-lethal and some tac-loads.  However, if you have no plan on using those, then it's not an issue.  Although pump actions probably have a better record for reliability.

Most Pumps are cheap, reliable with all loads including the very light ones, and alive with recoil especially those 3" Mag slugs.

Autos are mostly expensive, reliable with most loads but have issues sometimes with those light loads, and you can fire off alot of rounds with little recoil including those 3" Mag slugs.

I own a M1 Super 90.... and have to say.. I can't get all that excited about pumps. But I do like that new Nova.

I have an Ithaca 37 M&P model that holds eight rounds and for a pump it is really fast with the slam-fire feature.

I prefer the dependability of the pump over the low recoil of the auto. With an 870, I never forget to pump.

Prefer semis myself.

All bow down to Signore Benelli!

I also chose the semi shotgun for the simplicity of pulling the trigger. My pick? A [green]Wilson Combat Scattergun Technologies K9[/green]. My only modification to this OD Green Monster is the addition of an M3 Tactical Illuminator. The only problem is I have to use full power loads to cycle the gas system, all those cool specialty rounds are out.

I won a [blue]Winchester 1300 Defender[/blue] from AR15.com's raffle a couple of months ago. I added a Knoxx(Hogue) recoil absorbing stockset, had the 18" barrel modified by VangComp, and added a green fiberoptic frontsight...100% BRAND NEW! Maybe have Lauer Custom Weaponry do a nice camo job on it? Haven't had the time to get out and shoot it. Maybe for sale? Anyone interested?

Another vote for the Benelli M1 Super 90. I have the SureFire foreend on it, and it is my weapon of choice for home defense.

My first choice is my Benelli M-1 S-90 pre ban with tritium ghost rings, surefire fore end, pistol grip, and sidesaddle. The side saddle precludes tactical loads for defense. Although, the more rounds thru it the more reliable it is getting with tac loads.

I've tried Scatter Gun Tech and a lot of others, but I still grab the old High Standard Riot to throw in the truck. Cheap and works every time!

Go with a pump you like.

Cool another person with good taste in shotguns!
I'll probably own only Benelli's my whole life.

Personally, I prefer the pump gun.  But then again, I've never owned an auto.  I kind of want one so I can compare.

I use a handgun for defense. On the subject of shotguns though I see lots of people short shuck pumps at the range, especially under the 'stress' of clays competition. Most people would be better served with an autoloader.

I agree with ECS.  I believe the reason that the police use pump guns is because they aren't maintained that well, hence a pump is more reliable.  I used a pump for competetive skeet shooting for years, but gave up because of the short stroke.  Under stress you do tend to shuck it too fast and short, jamming the gun.  The Bennelli will not fail you when you need it.

Jammomatic .. I regularly shoot 3-gun.  Once shot a match in Alabama and this guy runs with his M3.  Switches to pump not 3 rounds or so into the stage.  Comes back to the waiting area after his run and proceeds to say:

"That gun is great, I can't count the times switching to pump has saved a run."

hmmm...

Personally I run an M1S90, 21" Vent Rib, Straight Stock and 9 rnd tube - at home for defense or competition.

As far as maintenance - I rarely clean the Benelli and it has yet to let me down in 6 years.

I'll second the Benelli M3.  Pump or semi-auto and handles the 3" shells too.  With 8 in the pipe, 1 in the chamber, six shot side saddle and 55 round bandoleer she packs a lot fire power.

Here's mine.
