It's going to be my CHL gun when I go for it but for now I'm just using it for protection in the car.

Any suggestions as far as ammo goes to carry?

Most people have a personal preference based on what actually feeds reliably in that particular weapon...I like Speer Gold Dot Hollow points for my carry gun.  YMMV

Heat seeking babykillers obviously.

The poster above my made a good choice but honestly, why not just use walmart bulk pack?!  The chance that you'll actually need the hollow points is low.

I like Winchester Ranger T in 147

But I've also run early Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot

...any of the "premium" HP designs are going to be good in my opinion.

Cop killing , baby deer heat  seeking ones, obviously.

Don't forget to put a shoulder thing on the pistol.

Personally , i tested my carry ammo in gel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RXGMPcednc to see how it works on people.

The chances you will need the gun are low also, so why not just leave it at home????

Blanks unless you know how to shoot straight.  If for home defense in the city use something with limited penetration.  Out here in the country I use Gold Dots as I don't need to worry about neighbors.

Speer Gold Dot, 124 gr. +P

Winchester Ranger T-Series, 147 gr. +P

Federal Hydra-Shok, 124 gr.

You should also carry two spare mags with the same ammo that is in the gun, and a third spare with ball for penetrating hard cover.

Not trying to sound like a Kool-Aid drinker, but a Glock will eat whatever you feed it. Buy quality SD ammo and you're good to go.

I always test the ammo I'm gonna carry anyways.

My informal water jug testing says that the 124Gr +P is good to go.

eta: GD 124gr +P on the left, HST 147gr on the right.

I'm partial to Hydra-Shoks. They perform pretty consistently in every test I've seen, though I doubt and quality SD ammo is going to be a problem. Outdoor World had a good deal on Winchester SD ammo last time I went, so I bought several boxes. You might check and see if they've still got a good price on it.

Also- I saw a pretty scientific test of SD ammo once, and it seems that bullet weight is the most important factor in penetration. Choose the heaviest ones of what's available. I'm assuming that since you're asking about HPs, you intend to use them for SD if needed.

147 speer gold dot is what I carry in my G17.  Was carrying Remington golden saber for unexpected past year. When it was time to change it out I switched. No problems with function in rather. I don't have any problems with any 9mm ammo in my glock

I really like Speer Gold Dots in both my M&P and my 1911.

124gr. for the 9mm, 185gr. +P for the .45.

In that case, I carry Gold Dot 124gr. +P in my Kahr PM9, Gold Dot 147gr. in my M&P9fs, Ranger Bonded 147gr. in my M&P9c (will switch this over to Gold Dot when I can get some more)

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, this man admits to buying his ammo in bulk! What would ever possess a normal person to purchase such a large amount of ammunition for a gun that is supposedly used for self defense. Clearly he was stocking up and planning an encounter like this.

Bears repeating.  Please follow the link.  Dr. Roberts lists several valid choices based on penetration and expansion.

I personally use Ranger T series but would certainly be happy with the Speer Gold Dots

Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P

I've put them through a few different guns with no issues and they appear to be well reviewed in ammo tests.

They can be had for about $0.50 per round when purchased in the 50 packs.

I carry Speer Gold Dots 147 gr. in my 9mms.  They feed well, shoot well and meet the FBI testing standards.

The cheaper winchester white box hollow points work well, but you might want to compare how much they flash, recoil and smoke compared to the boutique rounds.  If you like how they shoot and are happy with the accuracy, then you shouldn't have any problem with those either.

This was a big reason for me to pick Speer GDHP's over Winchester Rangers, the Ranger flashed a LOT brighter compared to the Gold Dot.

Ridiculous thinking without a shred of legal support.  A good shoot is a good shoot, period.

I don't know...of all of the personal defense shootings out there, do you think that is a good case study? I know the way that they portrayed the ammo in that case, but there was nothing done by the defense to counter that argument was there?

I, personally, don't think it's worth using that single case as a reason not to carry a good quality JHP but to each his own. Heck at least you carry! I think that I would be more worried about over penetration and hurting innocent bystanders with something that might not expand properly as opposed to the chain of events that would have to happen to get you a manslaughter conviction based on ammunition choice.

NO THEY WON'T.

I've seen four G22s that will NOT eat truncated cone ammo. They choke almost every round.

To answer the OP: Pretty much any quality JHP ammo will do. Some are marginally better than others but all are considerably better than ball. Shot placement is more important than the difference of any of them, but ball ammo sucks balls when it comes to stopping power.

The best carry ammo, IMO, that's readily available is Speer Gold Dots.  In 9mm, I prefer 147gr bullets, 158gr bullets in 357, and 230gr bullets in 45 ACP.

You might want to look up the stats on 9mm (or any, for that matter) shootings involving ball ammo with regard to amount of shots/time before hostile actions ceased.
